The deadly magma glass forge trap thing
« on: December 19, 2013, 04:48:26 pm »

So this is like my 5th embark on this particular volcano. I've got a pair of magma glass forges, and for some reason I get (every so often) Urist Mcsoontodie cancels job, dangerous terrain. I zoom to the location and there is a cloud of smoke and a dwarf that dies very soon after. What's going on here, this is the first time I've ever seen this. I've used magma furnaces and such before, and the only time I've ever had a dwarf die is during channeling. I've lost 5 dwarves so far.

The construction is like this:
MMMXXXFFXXXMMM
FFFFXXXFFXXXFFF
FFFFXXXFFXXXFFF
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Where m is magma, x is the workshop, and f is constructed floor over the magma.

If the dwarf dies immediately, his body and stuff are in the lower left hand square of the east shop. If he runs around bleeding to death, all his apparell is in that lower square and he dies nekkid. One dwarf appears to run off into the magma, because his body was gone.

There's almost certainly a fire imp or somesuch swimming in the magma who takes the occasional potshot at a dwarf working the forges. Imps throw fireballs which set dwarfs on fire. A ‼dwarf‼ emits a lot of smoke and occasionally repaths because of 'dangerous terrain' (filled with smoke/containing a burning dwarf). And generally dies in a few turns.

Imps only need line of sight to shoot your beards and are nearly invulnerable down in the magma, so the best way to handle them is to block their line of sight: either build the forges over a magma-filled channel shut off from the big magma pipe, or floor over the entire pipe, only leaving holes under the unpassable tiles of smelters and forges:

Code: [Select]
xBx    xxx
xxx    BxB
xxx    xxx
To the left, 'B'locked tiles of smelter, glassworks and kiln, to the right of forges. Holes leading down into magma under those tiles provide the required magma fuel and block passage of creatures and projectiles. Any other hole provides an opening for critters to crawl or shoot through.

Is there any kind of feedback that tells you its a mob?  I looked down a couple of z levels but I saw no critters.

I guess the thing to do is floor the whole volcano and just leave/make openings where I want the forges?

Check your combat (r)eports (a red "C", green "H", and/or blue "S" at the left edge of the screen means you have unread ones) - if something's been attacking your dwarves, it should show up there.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Didn't find it in the reports,  but I found a fire imp 17z levels down in the others tab of the status screen,  that must be him.
