I do wish that they'd done something about that; I remember that one of the iterations of the mod had a setup where your character model stayed in the world for a minute or so after you aborted.

The game is plainly broken in various ways and they have surprisingly little to show for the time invested in development, but it is also already fun and brimming with potential. Furthermore, a solid playerbase is a given with this game and that is not unimportant.

To be fair, to my understanding they basically had to rewrite the ArmA 2 engine from scratch to make the changes that were necessary. I imagine most of the development time was spent laying the groundwork rather than adding new items and stuff (gods, the inventory system alone looks well-worth the wait for the change from ArmA's); it is still an alpha. I'm willing to shell out to make sure that I will never again have something disappear because there wasn't enough space in my pack for it.

So far, I have only played it for 45 minutes and really enjoyed it.

There were no zombies. None. Fine by me.

I stumbled into town and found some bananas. Good stuff. Mostly fumbled with controls a bunch, ended up eating a banana and finding a drink.

I spot a human. Panic. Take a nose dive.

I approach a tent and find a man huddling within. Although we are both unarmed, he makes a valiant attempt to beat me to death. I avoid him by running backward.

At this point a third man appears and shoots the dude fighting me to death. I consider running, drop prone, but figure I'm cooked anyway so i get up and confidently greet the shooter with my fists lowered.

I guess this brave gesture wins me brownie points because the dude bandages me and leaves. I fumble with the controls and only figure out how to say "thanks" about 10 minutes later. Then I get shot through a window, fall down and bleed a bit, check the time irl and realize that I have a plane to catch (irl).

Good times so far...

Well, if anyone wishes to play in a group later today (or tomorrow, depends on how you see days starting) and you will be on about 2pm EST, get over to Kumyrna (I think that's right anyways...). As for the server, well, we'll see.

Finally finished the download. Took me two hours to get into a server that I didn't desynch from inside of five minutes, quickly found out that despite the extreme shortage of ammo there are still plenty of douches willing to waste rounds on fresh spawns. Good to see nothing's changed.

Well, some things have.

To be perfectly honest I'd be happy if sniper rifles were never added to the standalone. Too many bad memories of being one-shotted while running through a pitch-black forest in the middle of the night because some chucklefuck had turned their gamma all the way up.

On the bright side, I got a spawn at Novy Sobor and got lucky with gear, so I had already geared up completely save a gun by the time I took the west road out of Stary. Naturally I started lagging when killing a zed at the nwaf, and then got disconnected right as I was about to pick up an ammo box.

Oh, and if anyone was wondering, maps spawn inside wrecked cars. You can open the doors and trunks, and they tend to be in the front seat. They come as partial maps but two can be combined into a full map of Chernarus.

As an aside, has anyone tested to see if pine trees still make you invulnerable to zeds?

I've tried and they do not make you invulnerable.

Also, thanks for the tip on where to find maps, I never knew that.

They have two snipers (well, one and a half) and just about every gun is a one- or two shot kill.

Maps, food and some clothing spawns in cars. Sedans spawn the most, vans may not spawn anything. You can even find half maps in the cars.

Has anyone seen a city map yet?

No city maps. Thusfar I've found maps of the NE, E, and W. No clothing and very little food in cars, more often canisters of gas. I found some rifle rounds in the trunk of a police car.

I think you missed the point about the snipers (as an aside, to my knowledge the only one in the standalone is the Mosin, and that has a relatively low-zoom scope). One of the least-fun aspects of DayZ is that pretty much every gunfight either consisted of one party sniping a defenseless person from 500+m away, or two parties with high-powered scoped longrifles waiting to see which one would get impatient and poke their head out first.

That kills the interesting parts of combat; nobody would ever willingly choose a carbine, shotgun, or assault rifle over a longrifle. Even without things like the AS-50 and thermal scopes, sniper rifles (especially the DMR, at least in the hands of someone who understands how mildots work) were obscenely good. The standalone is seeing a lot more of the intense MOUT-style confrontations, because there's only one sniper and it isn't even the best weapon in the game. Engagements are trending more towards the ~50-150m range with a sizeable chunk of CQC, as opposed to "Whoever has their viewdistance set further out wins".

Every gun is a one-shot kill with a headshot, but non-longrifles can actually take anywhere from 3-4 shots for most ARs and carbines to upwards of 12 shots for SMGs and some pistols to do enough blood damage for a kill. There's also the point that non-longrifles are much more difficult to get headshots with at long range, and you don't have the guaranteed 2-shot kill if you miss. I've seen both ingame and on recorded footage people not dropping until they've taken a good chunk of a STANAG magazine.

I agree with you hole-hardheartedly about snipers and what not. I do think they are going to add sniper rifles into the game, since it would be unrealistic without them. And when they are added, I think they should be super rare, with a .01% spawn chance or less.

Yeah the DMR in the mod was completely overpowered. I remember one time my buddies and I were stuck near Krutoy cap, I was on Skalisty Island with a DMR and my 2 buddies had CQB weapons and were pinned down by a sniper that was in the lighthouse. He saw me on the island and took potshots at me, but figured nobody could hit from that distance and almost killed me when I tried to swim across. I went back to the island, proned, pulled out my DMR, and 2 shot him from 1000m (first shot made him unconscious, second killed him). I know they slowed the fire rate down on it I think, but it was crazy because it could easily 2 hit anything within 700m reliably, and 1000m if you had used the DMR a lot and knew how to use it, and before they slowed the fire rate down you could shoot ridiculously fast... a squad with all DMRs against a squad with CQB, even in an engagement of only 100m-200m, would demolish the CQB squad as long as they knew how to use mil dots.

PS: To get a 1000m shot with the DMR you had to aim 1/3 of the way down the bottom bar on zoom level 2. It was impossible to get a 1000m shot on zoom level 1 because the view distance didn't allow you to see your target.

edit: I honestly think they should put the DMR in the standalone, but make it a very rare spawn and have it spawn with 5 bullets and make the ammo for it impossible to get otherwise. Make the DMR take a clip, but because no clips will be found you have to go into your inventory and manually chamber a round every shot. Since ammo would be so scarce and you would only be able to fire repeatedly after long delays, it'd balance out KOS from snipers because almost no sniper is going to waste that kind of scarce resource unless they NEED to.

How do you even use the maps? I've had several, but never been able to actually view them. The map screen is and remains completely black whether I have one or not.
