So I used some Christmas money to buy it and I'm neither impressed nor disappointed. It's what I expected at this stage of development, it looks nice and runs smooth but there are evidently the same issues that plagued the mod version.

I managed to find some servers that frown on PvP too - so I've been using those to enjoy the mechanics without worrying about some n00b killing me every time I restart for no other reason than he likes 'pew pew'.

I like PvP. Not because I enjoy killing someone, but because there isn't much threat otherwise. I think the best part of DayZ so far has been the Hero's vs Bandits server. Without PvP you will end up running around, collecting items, then use them to do what? Gun down zombies?

I used to play a rp epoch server. All pvp engagements were clan warfare, no direct shooting etc etc
Server was really good i have to say. Survival was nice, you had that running with you forever, then you wanted to build a base, on your own or with others and then you started doing missions. And if you felt like it you got into a clan war and started feeling sorry about it later :D PvP is fun but its not the main focus as i felt it.
So each with its own

PS: the engine is so good that its a shame they never implemented hunting and the works (skinning, making clothes, getting food etc) or other activities that could make some income. You know, evolve a bit..

Just got it today, people randomly decide to kill me when I am waving and/or talking to them.

As sutch, who here is playing where?

yea, random PKers is the main reason I am avoiding this style of game.  I simply dislike playing for a while then needing to start completely fresh due to someone shooting me when I have little chance of returning the favor.

It seems to be alot better than the mod. Less sniper rifles, so you're not going to be blow away from 10000 feet.

The part about this Alpha that I don't like so far is that PEOPLE KEEP COMBAT LOGGING! Its so frustrating. Like, I'm a guy with an axe and I'm about to kill a guy with full gear and a nice assault rifle. He just alt-f4's and leaves before I can get the final blow in.

Combat logging was such a huge problem in the mod, but then it got fixed (for the most part). But now its back, and being used way more often then it was before.

PvP in context is fine - but some douche running up to you and killing you when you CLEARLY have nothing but starting equipment? That's not fun...that's not fun at all.

PvE servers are great when they're actively modded to kick the dickhead 'pew pew' players. Once you've scavenged your equipment and learnt the ropes a little, there's nothing stopping players popping over to more traditional servers to experience the joys of children 'combat logging'.

Maybe there ought to be a setting you can put on that protects people from PvP (and they cannot do PvP either) for, say, half an hour after spawning, so you can't spawn and be killed in five seconds.

I think half an hour is a little much. For 5-10 minutes maybe. It should also instantly wear off if they get a gun or melee weapon.
