So far I've resisted the standalone version. Is it any better than the mod yet and is there any reason to think that if Arma2 runs like crap on my computer that this will run any better?

It runs better than the mod, and I would say yes, buy it now. Because as development continues it will increase in price, minecraft style.

It runs better then the mod, but not as good as it will run later. I agree with werty, buying it now rather then later is your best option.

Well, the game is certainly fun.

One moment I get gunned down by tow people who (I think) where attempting to rob me.

Shortly thereafter I run into two heavily armed people who appeared as by magic and gave me a hat.

And now my current life is sitting in the wrecked cargoship waiting for me to be able to get on in about 18.25 hours.
Come join us in hardcore mode! Just remember to turn off the headbob!

I succumbed. Game is still not ready for prime time, but they make that very obvious in the warnings on the steam page and elsewhere. Especially the big. "DON"T BUY THE GAME" from Rocket himself. Still, it's got it's ability to be fun despite the inherant Armaness that envelops the whole thing and the fact that at the moment it's less full of features and more full of bugs than even the mod is.

After half a dozen zombie deaths I finally met up with my first pvp death. I got axed. It's very hard to find anything worthwhile at the moment... I had to scavenge a couple of small towns and a chunk of a large city before I even found any food or water. So many spray paint cans though. and from a distance they look like water bottles... little lying water bottles like a mirage in the desert. I'll be happy to meet up with anyone, though, if I can figure out how to get there and what server you're on. I'd be of little use with my trusty flashlight, though.
