at which point you forbid the nickel silver and the log. This puts the steel bars in the #1 spot for the artifact's construction, and as it's valid for the forge reaction
Are you sure it puts the steel bars in the #1 spot rather than simply putting the second item in the first slot?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The second item was forbidden too: The order was metal bar, wooden log, metal bar, bone, rough gem, and as you quoted, I said to "forbid the nickel silver and the log."

I have heard that if you use this trick to force an invalid material (such as stone blocks at a Forge or some leather at a Carpenter's Shop) into the top slot, the game will default to have the artifact made of iron, instead. Can anyone confirm or clarify this?

Dwarf Fortress -- kind of like Minecraft, but for people who hate themselves.

It works with the vanilla version, since the game defaults to the first thing it finds instead of iron in particular. Recently I moved adamantine from the bottom of the file to the top, above iron, and boom, easy adamantine artifacts, if desired.

I've forbidden the base leather during leatherworker moods before and gotten iron "leather" artifacts.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
