I can get behind that,

+1 intelligence
-1 wisdom

I'm also just gonna jump ahead and assume you take after your father more then your mother

+1 intelligence
+1 wisdom

now I need to know somethings about your parents life.

Are they well off or struggling to get by?

Where do they live? Do they live among humans? Do they live deep in mountain homes?  Or are they in between living on the surface outside the fortresses gate?  Or something completely different?

Our parents are struggling to get by. With the recent war against the human-elf coalition over in a white peace the demand for arms and armour has dropped considerably - there are plenty that have been recoveed off the dead, and with the Underdark quiet for the moment, there is little demand for the copious supply. They live in a shallow city near the gates to the mountain homes - chosen to supply the large gate garrison with arms and armour.

And... How about a blacksmith mother and... are runesmiths things? Is that a thing that is? If not let it be some sort of drunken wizard/enchanter/artificer thing for a father.
Our father was a dwarf. "Drunken" goes without saying.

Our parents are living in a hill dwarf town. They were born mountain dwarves, though; they were sent there as a trade connection/liaison of sorts with the outside world. They were respected, but respect doesn't buy bread, as we learned repeatedly in our life when business was poor.

I'm going to go with a mix of these, I'm gonna ignore the war part, because I'd normally be doing this in groups and I'm not sure other players would be cool with that.

Your mother works hard and is the main bread winner of the family, she produces very little when it comes to arms and armor and is more focused on producing tools.  Though being of dwarven make and seeing as how little dwarves care for gardening and wood felling, her business is barely steady in your first few years of life.

Your father on the other hand is a tinkerer, always trying to produce the next best thing, that will revolutionize dwarf kind.  Because of this he wastes materials and sells little, he's still relatively young and full of dreams!

the rest of the attributes changes will be in secret.

you are now a child, your parents are poor, what do they do with you?

Hoping to win a better future for their offspring, I am placed in the sacred dwarven trial of Funagog, where dwarves young or desperate are cast into the bottomless caverns. Those that make it back with something to better the fortress with are rewarded with all they need to start a new life for themselves however they may wish.

So far this is gonna win because it gives me the most to go off of, it should be noted your only like 8 humanwise (actual age is I dunno).

Exactly. And young children are better at learning, so we'll get more stat bonuses if we survive.

Also, it's the dwarfiest thing to do, tossing your children into a pit of doom. I think that's a common practice around here :P.

They realized that we are intelligent early enough, as you were able to read some books they still had after a fun lesson of uncle Vernon, so they used their little money to send you to Jeremy, the friendly human wizard, who taught you in basic introductionary magic.

Okay I just need a better reason as to why they abandon you for that train of events to unfurl. Something like your mom dying or something, that or we could just go with it's tradition, but it seems more like something you'd do at 16-18 then 8.  We could always hold off on it.

but here's some other questions

are you religious?

what do you do in your spare time?

what kind of education do you have? (it should be noted that formal normal schooling costs money, and that most people don't send there kids to school) or possibly an apprenticeship (also costs money but not as much)  Were you sent away to live with monks or clerics?

do you have latent magical properties?  If so what?

Of course. Who isn't?

Apprenticeship, to a goldsmith. It was my parents' hope for a better life for their son. It might have worked, if it wasn't for that goblin raid.
(We need a plot hook somehow...)

I've heard rumors that I should, but if so I don't know what.

Hell no!

what do you do in your spare time?

Roped our friends into small time experiments and adventures.

what kind of education do you have? (it should be noted that formal normal schooling costs money, and that most people don't send there kids to school) or possibly an apprenticeship (also costs money but not as much)  Were you sent away to live with monks or clerics?

Taught by our parents, I guess.

do you have latent magical properties?  If so what?

Yes! Our fathers magical tinkering must have sparked something weird. We can see how things work, how they fit together, and how to improve them. Along with an increasingly itchy desire to create.

I will have to insist upon the not religeous.

Gods have no place in mad wizardry.
