dwarves do not pick up posessions of the dead
« on: December 17, 2013, 09:28:41 am »

Hi there.

I'm pretty new to the DF and have a strange problem. I searched the web, wiki and these forums byt couldn't find anything that would explain it to me.

I had a pretty severe tantrum spirale recently that i managed to survive though. As a result whole of my fort has dead dwarves' clothes lying around everywhere. All those items are marked for claim but my dwarves do not pickl those up. No matter how much time passes they still refuse to pick it up and haul to the stockpiles.
The also won't pick up the bodies and posessions of some dead goblins who tried to attack the fort and some stuff that somehow one of the caravans just left lying around my depot even though we never traded for those.

I tried deleting and creating new stockpiles, marking items as forbidden and then claiming them again, switching dwarves to pick up any death-related items but all this never helped me.

Can anyone explain this to me and maybe help with the solution?

You must reclaim items from deads of other races (unless you go 'o'->'F' and change it)
About your problem, maybe those are marked for dump and you have no dump area ?
Can you try to trade those ? If so, your dwarves should bring it to the Depot, and from there you can haul it to your stockpile ?

Hi,

Those are definitely not marked for dump, i checked. And no they dont bring it to Depot even though i can see it in the list of goods and mark it as pending.

if the items look like this {Pig tail fiber sock} they're still forbidden

Check if wheelarrows are enabled. If you have only a few wheelbarrows, hauling may seem like it's not even taking place.

one thing I ran into while trying to clean up the lawn from battle debris was that a mass dump was ignored until I changed (o)rders to include outside pickup of refuse.  I had not connected dump items with actual refuse in my head

Most of the items are in my fort, in fact in my dining room/meeting hall.  And i dont want to dump them as there is a lot of valuable stuff. I want it brought to stockpiles for later use.

I tried marking some of it for dump and they indeed brought some of it to the dump area, but just a tiny portion of it. I have now marked the dumped stuff for reclaim via d->b->c but they dont seem to pick anything from there either.

if they are items dropped by your dwarfs (as opposed to ex-property of ex-dwarfs), they may still have an 'owned' tag that'll keep them from being moved.  If you reclaim something from a dump pile and it doesn't move eventually, you may not have the stockpiles you think you have.

If those are owned items, create cabinets/chests in dwarves' rooms and they will store their owned items.

All of those are clothes left by dead dwarves. I have a stockpile specifically for armor and it is empty,

For quick unforbidding, such as when 'forbid death items' is on by default, hit d>B>c and draw the selection box across all the items.

Maybe dfhack -> cleanowned scattered helps if they are still considered owned.

clothing doesn't go into an armor stockpile iirc, but into a finished goods stockpile

Oh yeah, I thought you meant "armor" by clothing. Good call, Garath.

If you look into items descriptions, does it still say "owned by" someone?

There are two reasons why dwarf-owned items will remain owned after death:

1. The dwarf owned a tomb prior to dying - in this situation, all owned items will be buried in the tomb, so you'll need to build enough chests, cabinets, weapon racks, and/or armor stands to hold all of the items.
2. The dwarf who died has a next-of-kin - in this situation, ownership of those items will be transferred to said relative. I don't recall exactly who qualifies as a next-of-kin, but I'm pretty sure spouses, parents, and children count.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
