Yep.  At the beginning, you have to carefully expand your economy, because that imperial aid is steadily dwindling, and will eventually be gone.  Don't spend your resources on expensive things that don't bring in much income, like very high level habitats.

Eventually, you'll meet a player.  If you trade with him, you'll start getting lucrative trade deals for lots of credits, and his surplus ore for lots of nanobit production.  However, if you trade, the other guy will get powerful, too.  It's kind of an interesting problem....

There is no such thing as 'queue everything up and have resources to spare' like you see in a lot of games like this, you will actually have to forgo certain structures for others since construction (at least early on) eats up your materials far faster than you can produce them.
Yes and even later on, with over dozen colonised planets I had to send special "trains" to deliver enough material to new colonies so that they can build at least few basic structures and people don't protest they don't have Habitat to live in and Planetar Shield to be protected with. That ate quite some resources, slowing ship building in older colonies. One needs to pick priorities, yes.

I feel that a key aspect of strategy is "hard decisions", so I have tried to supply as many of those as possible.

Priorities, planning ... novel concepts for a game it seems.

This current game is shaping quite nicely.

Mostly due to the Bay12 players that have joined up. They seem to be a cut above when it comes to game mechanics understanding...

Been playing for a few days and I am liking it so far. Good browser 4x games are rather hard to find, specially ones with a fair bit of customization options like this.

The current game is a few weeks old now and those Bay12'ers that joined in should be past their first impressions of the game and beginning to see what the game is really about.

I'm wondering what you think now.

Maybe some anecdotes about something that happened in-game that was noteworthy.

Still just managing away for the most part.  Trying to grow my infrastructure and balance the budget.  I'm nearly established.

I'm still trying to deal with my budget deficit and establish contact with more neighbours. This has a delicious "Diplomacy" vibe to it.

Trying this out and looks pretty nice!  Detailed systems (well documented in the in-game manual) regarding economy, ships, etc.  Not to the diplomacy part yet.

First night was a little overwhelming.  I think the tutorial introduced many topics in short order and started with a fair amount of units.  Tutorial blends giving information by text, teaching you to use the manual, and showing videos.  Personally, not big on Youtube, so relied on the manual mostly.  Different learning styles for different people though and I know plenty of people watch videos to learn things.

Third night in and (I think) I have a solid handle on my units/production/economy.  My strategy is not optimized, but have a plan and seem to be able to execute it.

The politics are becoming really engaging, fairly complex situations are unfolding.

STAND BY FOR SLOPPILY FORMATTED STORY

Viscount Yanavo to our east has (as far as I can figure) been looking at destroying Sheb, me, and sheb's other vassals because currently we are the most likely to win.  If you can hold 4k prestige for 10 turns, then you win the game, and Sheb is at 2.6k right now.  This is also at this point a fair bit more than anyone else has.

Anyways, Yanavo's little empire fell apart because his vassal Zagata to his north attacked one of Yanavos other vassals over the boarding of one of his scout vessels (to check for contraband).  Zagata managed to convince Baroness Agiran to Yanavos south, (who had only just joined Yanavo) that Yanavo was a crazy tyrant and needed to die.  Zagata then proceeded to try to convince us to join him, but we were reluctant to do so.  Just today I unilaterally declared war on Yanavo since we were taking too long and Yanavo was starting to recover.  (sorry sheb, this guy has to go down, its for the good of the team) Yanavo managed to get both of Zagatas vassals to join him instead, which has improved his position significantly.

I'm currently trading with some of our enemies vassals who shall remain nameless, frantically building up my ship production capacity so I can fight an extended war with Yanavo, and am in the process of training and deploying large numbers of agents to keep an eye on enemy territory.

This is all shaping up to be pretty exciting.

He, it's allright. It just took me off-step, because I though our strategy was to grab Zagata's stuff. I even pushed Zagata's vassal to desert him.^^

Welp, I can't seem to access the game tonight, there is a crash (line 950?) every time I try to, on both Firefox and Chrome.

I can get to Training game and forum but yes, there is "db error, id: 950, file: functions, line: 1522" popup blocking the main game.
