Dwarves won't haul items back from trade depot
« on: December 16, 2013, 10:31:01 pm »

Hello, I'm pretty new to the game.  Recently I've run into a problem where my dwarves have stopped hauling items back from the trade depot to their particular stockpiles.  The items are just sitting on the ground where the trade depot is located.  There are plenty of free dwarves so they have no excuse not to haul it.  I've tried everything I can think of to fix it, including:

-double checked the stockpile settings
-deleted and remade the stockpile
-deleted the trade depot
-set iron items to melt and activated my smelters

Yet the items still continue to just sit there on the floor.  I've checked around and haven't found any solutions... help would be greatly appreciated.

PS. My mayor is cranky because I need to upgrade his quarters, could that be it?  Everything else is being hauled just fine.

EDIT:  Well I set up some other default stockpiles for testing, and all the idle dwarves jumped to life.  It seems something is wrong with my custom stockpile settings...

What's the settings on the custom stockpiles, and what were you trying to get them to haul?

No, it has nothing to do with the mayor.  It's something to do with the stockpile settings.  Since stuff came from the stockpile but won't go back then the problem could be that the stockpile is limited to accept from links only.  If that's the case change it to accept from anywhere.

I thought 'complained about the draft lately' meant they didn't have a door to their room.

This is actually very convenient for me. Since I wanted to trade that stuff away, it's nice that it sits in the depot until the next caravan. It would be nice if you could bring stuff to the depot even when merchants are not around.

For example, even if I've already traded for whatever I want from the merchants I search for 'x', which will find all the discarded clothing laying around that dwarves toss on the ground once they have a replacement for worn clothes. I mark them and dwarves will keep hauling them to the depot until the caravan leaves where it will sit until the next caravan.

Also if you put a few barrels of drink inside by marking them for trade, some of your dwarves will go there to drink, though that can be a bad thing. If they are armed with crossbows and thieving creatures try to steal from it though, it could be useful.

That's why I normally forbid all the items still in the depot after the traders left (by 't' on the depot you get the list of items).

Okay well I managed to solve the problem.  Once I isolated the stockpile as the issue it didn't take too long.

The problem was that in the "Additional Options" category I must've somehow inadvertently blocked the two settings.  Of course because the category itself was still enabled, it showed up as white, and when I selected it the light grey in the settings didn't catch my attention.  Now it's working though.  I agree it was convenient for trading, but I like to keep all my loot safe in the hoard.

Thanks for the responses all.
