Opinions ho!

A: You should do it around the Punic Wars. Rome was still a superpower, but didn't even control all of Italy yet. Besides, then you can play around with the whole Hannibal thing.
B: You should set up provinces based on major cities, or, failing that, on historical provincial boundaries.
C: Slow battles. Ideally, they should be similar to a Napoleon-focused strategy game that was floating around a while ago.
D: You probably don't need to bother with maps. We have cartographers for a reason, after all, and text-based battles offer a greater degree of flexibility without artificial systems thrown in there.
E: I think it could be quite good, especially if you stay true to historical accuracy to some degree. If you need inspiration, I recommend Rome: Total War: Europa Barbarorum. Or any Rome: Total War realism mod. Roma Surrectum would probably give you plenty of Roman units and such to draw from, as well.

Yeah, in EB Rome is one of two factions, the other being Carthage, that don't start off so broke you have to sell off all your assets and spend generations building infrastructure to make them economically feasible, which attests to their power :P. I still like Sarmatia best, though.

Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

Yup. But a modern Roman Empire would be cool. Maybe like a 1920's setting.

Dying of laughter?
Dying of pure unbridled hatred, actually.

My suggestion would be to get creative and do an empire that is in an imagined setting. You still can follow the parallels of Rome, but without the historical constraints. Lets you play around with things more and makes it less of a burden on you when calculating things.

The empire feel has to be definitely supported with a politics system - senate and aristocratic families have to play a part and people should be able to use that to full extent to get advantages over each other without having to resort to civil war.

Maps are always good, I'd keep them to empire and province maps though, f you get bogged down in details it will slow you down to a crawl.

Why not have an alternate history so we have some fudge room around date and so on.
Id like in empire map but realy do save all the detail for province maps, you will use them a lot more than battle maps.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Unofficial slogan of Bay 12 Games.

I like that, the only problem is that then, before I start, I have to think up a government, culture, possibly language, depends on whether or not I do any roleplaying here, etc.

Yeah, I do realize its a rather large load, but as I said, its easy to simply take Roman stuff, just put it in a different geography and situation, maybe take up people's suggestion on culture and don't worry about details too much unless your idea is to do a strong historical recreation, in which case stick with the real world.

I was originally planning to name the regions by their Latin names, but I don't think I could do that everywhere. So I'll probably stick to naming them with their English names.
