What is your favorite co-op rts?
« on: December 15, 2013, 06:40:01 am »

What is your favorite rts game that you've played together with friends? I've played Company of Heroes, Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War 2 and Supreme Commander 2 to death with friends.

SC2 was so much fun going up against the AI on the highest difficulty. It was a non-stop sea of slaughter heading your way. Sure it's not as epic as the first game but it was a lot faster. No more waiting for 90 minutes to build an experimental.

Dawn of War 2 (+ expansions) had both an awesome campaign that could be played co-op and it had a side game called "The Last Stand" in which you and 2 other players used customizable heroes to survive as long as possible.

Company of heroes is just plain fun to watch. With 4 armies to choose from and a lot of maps (that steadily gets wrecked as the game continues) this game just never gets boring.

So what are your opinions? Any game I haven't mentioned yet that you loved to play co op?

Wesnoth World COnquest is a fun game to play with a few pals. Much randomness usually, though it is a tbs, not an rts.

Act of War: Direct Action and the addon High Treason.
The game suffered horribly from terrible support and bugs...
In high treason for example early american and corporate AT infantry would cause the game to crash if you selected it making skirmish games as their sides nearly impossible.

But even the base game is fun.

I've played Supreme Commander 1 on co-op. That's a lot of fun although it's hampered by the fact that the game runs at the speed of the slowest computer in the match, and AI really exacerbates the slowdown- 2 humans VS. 2 AI on medium sized map grind to basically unplayable speeds. On a small map though, lots of fun.

That said, I'm mostly posting to watch, because this interests me.

I'd definitely have to say Company of Heroes. I spent hundreds of hours with my friends fighting the AI, pushing them back, being pushed back. It was always intense and always great fun.

There aren't a whole lot of games with great AI though, unfortunately. My list is pretty much limited to Company of Heroes and the Command and Conquer series.

AI War, more depth and actual strategy than just about any other RTS i've played

of course it is also not a game that you should expect to finish in one sitting... my last ai war coop took about 20 hours to complete ;)

Natural Selection 2, the commander role is like a RTS, but the units you control are actual players.

Company of Heroes is still king, to me. It's not as advanced as Men of War, but I think it offers the best mix of action and strategy. I think between all the co-op and map making I did for co-op, I probably clocked like 1,000 hours on it.

The AI in Company of Heroes isn't very good (it is decent though). It is just able to control its troops much better than you can control yours (because it is a computer), and Company of Heroes is a game of fine control rather then wave tactics. So when it has 6 troops spread across the map and can put them all into cover in an instant, it has a massive advantage over you.

It is why I massacred the computer once I actually started pausing the game. The CPU does badly against choke points.

I've played a lot of Men of War with my friends, especially the option where you have a ridiculous amount of points to buy stuff with and then just straight up goofed around buying a shit load of the Russian missile trucks and levelling half the map.

I've played a fair couple of games of AoE2 and SW:GB with my sisters. Unfortunately, in most cases against a half-decent computer opponent, I had to use my sister's team as a means of slowing down the computer as I amass a huge garrison of troops and heavy artillery, while my sister is struggling to keep her front lines intact. Fortunately, in one map, we had a small island acting as the front doors of our lands, and having a small team of troops hanging out in the outskirts prevented any sneak attacks from the enemy, and funneled their forces to make use of the island they setup a fortress in.

Unfortunately for them, they paid attention to the weaker one, instead of fortifying against the actual threat. An armada of battering rams later, and the island was mine. Cobble together my sister's remaining forces, and my mass of AT-ATs and rams, with support from a legion of stormtroopers, and the computer was as sure as finished.

Myth: The Fallen Lords, and Myth 2: Soulblighter. Never played any RTS that even came close to these in quality of co-op or team play.

Dawn of War Dark Crusade with the Firestorm over Kaurava mod was pretty fun to play against AI in skirmish mode. There's even new mod-made AI difficulty levels to make it more challenging. Although the AI seems to have a tendency to eventually "give up" (get dumber) once some really big assault fails, and the Eldar were pretty OP last I played.
