Hire or not hire military software engineer?

I prefer to hire, because he can be very handy in many situations and I don't think he is dangerous. Even if he is, that may be an interesting plot line

I prefer hiring as well. All for crazy plot twists.

Explosive railgun shells? Wouldn't they be fired at a velocity where conventional explosives would be redundant?

....Are they... nuclear railgun shells?

As for crew, I say we take the AI at least. He'll be useful for stuff like damage control and targeting solutions.

You decide to hire the AI*, the ex-Seata military software engineer* and the small band of mercenaries*. Additionally, you gather supplies and prepare for the mission. While the crew downstairs prepares a variety of new shrapnel ammunition, the AI and our newest software engineer are trying to find a way of breaking into the enemy mining drones systems. While it's unlikely that they'll be heavily protected, almost all systems rely on encrypted transmissions. Basing itself on mission information by house Saeta scouts, the AI does believe that while it may not be capable of taking control of the mining drones, it should find itself able to jam their communications, allowing them to be shut down and scooped up later in the mission.

Before you depart for the A-29 system, you receive another report with the latest information. The mining fleet  is spread thorough the system but they appear to be clustered around one fairly large asteroid. It's presumed that this is were the mining ships are hiding. The mining drones themselves have been seen in operation around various smaller asteroids. Currently they appear to be working on several asteroids in close proximity to the jumpgates

10ebbor10, You forgot to update assets

Attacking directly on the large asteroid looks like not the best idea, I'd prefer to defeat ships they are willing to send out from base first, patrolling between smaller asteroids is a nice start, then depending on the results we should decide should we start hunting capital ships\bases or not

Question: Are there any Saeta bases in A-29?

And new personal project:

While others plan the operation, Tremor will work on the drawing board trying to design a cheap dumbfire rocket, made mostly from fuel and simple materials, compatible with standard missile launchers, and possible to build using tools present on Redemption

He will invite Fernando to help with the design, to make fuel used in rockets more stable and less prone to spontaneous explosions, typical problems of handmade rockets

A-29 is a disputed sector. Neither faction has constructed a base yet.

Begin tweaking on rocket mantling specifications, alongside Tremor.

"Without a proper lab equipment we won't create anything special I fear, but we can create some destructive rockets. I would like to get my hand on the drones though, I think they might be supplicants of interesting materials."

"I bet if we could nab one of their mining drone, they must have some sort of method of scanning for minerals. That would be quite an asset."

Hunt ships that are separated from the main body, then hunt the ships they send at us unless it is a huge force, then hunt the large asteroid and capital ships separately.

Also I am adopting a crew member:

Name: Kalek Tovast

Species: KATCR V1462 DS531 (Or "Kat" which is the normal slang name for the species)
Species Bio:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Gender: Male

Character Appearance: Slim, vaguely feminine build, slightly unkempt hair down to waist (brown), left cat ear pierced in three different spots with faded metal rings, cat tail has a broken faded metal bell tied to it, Faded leather collar around neck (unintelligible  faded lettering on metal dogtag attached to collar), slightly worn and torn long sleeved blind you with rainbows grade technicolor shirt with lots and lots of pockets and pouches sewn in or tied to it, slightly worn and torn blind you with rainbows grade technicolored pants with lots and lots of pouches and pockets sewn in or tied to it, not particularly muscular, around 5'6 in hight, no shoes, no socks, left eye green, right eye red, difficult to see short thin scar to the right of the red eye.

Character bio: Born in a litter of 7, one sibling a stillborn in Orbital Station 3 of the Nogath moon. Fairly uneventful childhood until late teens when he and his 5 living siblings were hired as mechanics for a government chartered mining trawler. A pirate who identified himself as Bloodbeard the 16th ambushed the trawler in the asteroid belt. The miners refused to be boarded and Bloodbeard opened fire. Kalek saw two of his siblings get sucked out of a hull breach before the bulkhead slammed shut. Katel bolted for the escape pod bay, but not before a small piece of shrapnel from a blast nailed him directly next to the eye. Bleeding he crawled into an escape pod and jettisoned. Through the rear viewport he could see Bloodbeard's cruiser dock with the Trawler before he blacked out from blood loss. He awoke in Charter Station 6's medbay, the home station of the Mining Trawler, the pod had autopiloted there. He was told that his right eye had beed damaged by the shrapnel, his eye pigment would slowly fade red and then fade to a pink as time went on. As soon as Kalek was able, he joined a crew bound for he didn't care where. He vowed to eventually find Bloodbeard and visit agony upon him or die. The crew he joined was bound for the inner core.

Personality: Withdrawn sometimes, otherwise absurdly hyper and impulsive.

Specialty: Automated Machines (drones, weak AI's, droids)

-snip-

Ee. Yeah. I'm just gonna field this one. This game takes place in a human galaxy. No real aliens, or cat people. I mean it's up to ebb or in the end, but I'm thinking altering your character would be the best bet for everyone.

Plus your character is a cat person with two different colored eyes. I'm going to call Mary Sue. Most characters are the majority, few are the exception. Notice how all of our characters have a back story that is reasonable in how we got landed in all of these situation?

This isn't a flame, just an attempt to preserve the atmosphere of the game we are running.

Surprisingly, I never considered nor determined whether or not there were non human intelligent species. They're surprisingly absent though, and I'm not sure if retconning them in is a good idea.

On a side note, there is an OOC thread.

Anyway, I'm afraid I'm going to remain with a no no-human organic intelligence universe.
