"Your dad should be fine, but he's going to need to be in the hospital for a bit."
The feeling of relief that flooded through Kaia upon hearing those words was so great that her knees began to tremble, so she quickly sat down on the seat adjacent to her mother before she completely embarrassed herself by collapsing on the floor or some such.
Once she had sat down, Kaia threw her arms around her mother, hugging her tightly.
"I was so scared that I'd... That he was..." Tears brimmed in the corners of her eyes.
"Shh, it's okay. He's going to be fine now..." Wrapping her arms around Kaia, she held her gently as she cried, releasing all the pent-up emotion within her.
After a few minutes had passed and Kaia had calmed down sufficiently, her mother gently released her from her embrace, and they both sat quietly for a moment.
"Feeling better, Kaia?"
"Much better. Sorry about that Mum, it's just... I don't know what I would have done if he'd di-"
"Shhh, don't say things like that. He's going to be just fine, so there's no more need for you to worry about it. Now, let's talk about that meeting you went off to. How did it go?"
Kaia paused for a moment before replying. How am I going to explain this? I don't fully understand it myself. Even more importantly, how much should I tell her? I don't want her to worry about me... After a moment's deliberation, Kaia decided that telling the truth was probably the best thing to do in this situation.
Talking quietly so as not to be overheard by anyone else nearby, Kaia explained to her mother what had occurred in the meeting, and their request that they all be examined. She left out her status as a potential threat however as she thought it would only worry her mother more. A short time passed before her mother replied.
"That's... a lot to take in. So there are more people like you then? I mean, people affected by the meteor."
"It seems that way. Though everyone seems to have been affected differently."
"And the people from the government, they want to examine you all? Are you sure you can trust them?"
"To be honest, I'm not sure we have much choice in the matter. They seem to know much more about this than I do though, and going with them seems to be my best chance of finding out exactly what happened to me."
"I don't like this, but if you have to go just please make sure you stay safe. I thought I'd lost you when you fell off the balcony, and I don't want to lose you again..."
"Oh, Mum." Kaia gave her mother a quick hug. "I'll be fine, don't worry. Just make sure you look after Dad until I get back, okay?"
"...Alright. Do you even know how long you'll be gone for?"
"I'm not sure, but I don't think it will take that long."
"Well, me and your father will be here waiting for you when you get back. Oh and take this." She hands Kaia her mobile. "I know you lost yours, so if you have any problems, just use mine to ring your father's phone. I love you."
"I love you too, Mum."
Giving her mother one final hug to say farewell, Kaia returns upstairs to re-join the others.
Head back upstairs.
((Hmm, now that I've finished this I'm thinking it may be slightly excessive.))
