((Holy fucking shit cow, I just realized I didn't worked out such an important domain of this setting as a religion. But I made the civlzed bations based on some kind of atheism. and I supposed that there may be a lot of different cults, sects, churches and beliefs in the world, but the dominant view on religion is atheism.))

((Ballistaes on walls? More like long-range howitizers. Firearms are long invented and such. Or you mean those city-states are a bit archaic? I'm not against that, I'll just have to consider it.))

[5] Guards pass you without even noticing your presense. That is good, because the warven pair seems not very friendly. As you look at their backs, you find yourself right in front of a small door in huge gates of the town. A small window opens in the door, and you see a bald head of dwarf on the other side.
 - Papers, please.
You pass him yours. he finds it satisfying and stamps them, ten passes them back to you. The window in the door shuts, but the door itself opens. You enter the town - it is buzzing with its everyday life and doesn't notice your arrival.

Patrick Hunt
((Please explain how a nation that youк character does not know a slightest thing about can impact your character?))
[convivtion roll - 3]Generals' forehead seems to be so thick that it doesn't alow even a smallest thought inside his head.
 - I'm not sure that what you are speaking of is that much important. You ideas are bright, but I will leave them to perform to you personally. We will strike our foes directly, and you'll cut their supplies - that is our winning strategy. I will now gather my army, and you gather your forces, colonel. Let us do it.

(( Because what I'm doing now is going to cause me enormous problems later because I lack information that is common knowledge. ))

" As I suspected, you have no idea what your doing. You intend to launch a frontal assault on an enemy who out matches you. No thank you general if your plan is to get us all killed then I believe my men and I who are all volunteers will resign our commission now and you can lead your army to it's death without us. Have you ever fought dragons general? Because I have.

Now if you don't want to go down in history as the man who doomed our nation then you'll do us both a favor and give me your sigil then you will go back to your villa and leave the running of a war to those who have the skills to do it right. We both know you got this posting because your family is important not because you have any idea how to carry it out and your family name will not protect you when you destroy our only hope of victory.

Give me what I asked for and go home general, you'll have your victory and your reward in due time.

Kathryn leaves your comment ignored - like if she hadn't noticed it.
You knock several times at the door and wait. In half a minute the door opens - an old well-dressed halfling with huge white whiskers and massive nose in center of his face opens it.
 - Sir, miss, - he gives you both a short bow -  Do you have an appointment or visiting our Guild for another purpose?

((You have your roll nerfed because you're trying to convince him in quite unpleasant things))
You words hit his painful place - his pride.
[conviction roll - 3-1] - Mind your words, colonel! Don't you intimidate an Elven general! And it is not mewho is useless in battle, it is just you who cowardly runs from it.

(( So how come when I played to his pride earlier I didn't get a +1? ))

" Coward? I walked into enemy territory with 3 men and in 24 hours annihilated 2 entire battalions and an iron dragon with nothing but 200 untrained and horribly equipped rebels.

You want to keep your rank and I want to protect our people, work with me general and we both come out of this as winners. Your good at dealing with administrative matters, far better then I am in fact but speak honestly general. How much experience do you have in combat situations? I was trained to fight this war from the time I was a child and I'm good at it.

Use my strengths general, I know at heart your a good man are the lives of tens of thousands of men really something your willing to sacrifice on the slim chance you can gain a swift victory? The siege will drag out for quite some time yet and I have a strategy to ensure our victory in a way that will convince the humans to never trespass on our lands ever again and every elf will known that it is thanks to you that we won.

Place your faith in my general my plan will work and all the reward for it will go to the great general who had the vision to bring victory to our people.

"Well, sir, I regret to say that I do not have an appointment. Rather, I have come to offer my services to your guild. As I understand it, during this time of reconstruction willing hands may not be quite so easy to come by, yes? I am a man of many talents, with a good head for business and a willingness to perform a great variety of tasks both clerical and physical. Would you have work for an individual of my description?"

Ask! Be confident!

((Sorry, haven't mentioned it among the others.))
[4] You manage to walk your way to this place vice versa and you end up at the inn you've stopped at night. Unfortunately, now you have no more time to look for blacksmith. But you remember that Yaro suggested to show the sword to Zacharia.

Harry Baldman
Old halfling seems to be pleased as well as surprised.
 - Oh, enter, good sir, miss, enter! Follow me!
He leads you through the main hall, than through several faceless corridors, and then you end up in frobt of the door with a sign "Head of the personnel department". Old halfling asks to wait him here, and enters. He's back ina few seconds, but now he's inviting you to come in. You enter the cabinet: it is a nice one, decorated in fine wood - mostly oak, though other types of wood can also be seen. In a high leather-covered chair behind a big desk covered with green cloth stands a halfling in quite crumpled buisness suit. he adresses you:
 - Come in. Please, have a seat, - he stretches his hand in a hospitable gesture, showing a pair of smaller chairs.
Old halfling smiles, then leaves and closes the door.

Have a seat.

"Hello, good sirs. I am Bobbin Yellowtoe, and I am quite glad that you have proven so amiable in the face of the inhospitable state of the country lately. And this is my friend Kathryn," he says, nodding in Kathryn's direction.

((For firearms, that was just me derp-ing, sorry. I keep thinking in terms of 18th century rather than 20th century. They probably wouldn't actually have full howitzers on them(the height+recoil=leverage isn't exactly good for structural integrity, fine craftdwarfship or no) though mortars could probably fit.  They're big, and seem bigger than they are, but at most, maybe 5 meters around. Meant to be a bit archaic compared to the main territories perhaps, but not far behind, and they have advancements in other areas instead. But yeah, it's not a full on fortress, just a walled town(it's the biggest settlement in a rather important mountain pass, after all...)))

Jaster settles down, berating himself internally for being so ridiculous. All the same, he is relieved that no lynch mobs were waiting...well, time to trawl the city for an inn that won't try to kill Gerruce. Usually takes most of the day anyway, but in a town this large, he shouldn't have to sleep in the gutter, at least. Unlike some places...

((Various sizes, populations, etc.:))
((Karrse: ~37,000 mi2, ~1,350,000 population; ~50% Human, ~15% Orc, ~10% Halfling ~10% Kobold, ~5% Dragonborn, ~5% Dwarf, ~5% Everything Else(but think mostly of races which would be in the desert or floodplains/rivers); active military force 20,000 (3-5 weeks(time to bring most of the force together and focus it on one goal); 'available' military force & muster time: ~130,000 conscripts(14-20 months), 50,000 reserves/recruits(3-5 months), 30,000 mercenaries(1-2 months);))

((Darrikslan: ~14,000 mi2, ~3,400,000 population; ~75% Dwarf, ~10% Human, ~5% Halflings, ~5% Gnomes, ~5% Everything Else(but think mostly of races which would be in the mountains or hills); active military force 50,000 (2-3 weeks); 'available' military force & muster time 410,000 conscripts(11-16 months), 240,000 reserves/recruits(4-6 weeks), 10,000 mercenaries(1-2 months);))

((Eilanos: ~22,000 mi2, ~1,900,000 population; ~60% Elf, ~15% Halfling, ~10% Human, ~5% Gnome, ~5% Tiefling, ~5% Everything Else(but think mostly of races which would be in the forest or coast); active military force 70,000 (4-7 weeks); 'available' military force & muster time ~210,000 conscripts(12-19 months), 80,000 reserves/recruits(4-6 weeks), 15,000 mercenaries(4-7 weeks);))

((Allright, let those be a bit archaic mortars. It wouldn't be plausible if a city of outcasts would use the miracles of modern warthought.))
While sculking around in search of an inn, you were several times stopped by local guards. They took you to the Guard Quaters. They were seeking for reason to charge accuse you in something with great prejudice, but your papers were fine and the speech was polite. You were released by the sunset. You know that they are watching you, but you've got used to it long ago. you find some decent inn - its visitors do not seem to be friendly, just like the holders. But still the holder - a fat man with a beard so dirty that it has lost its original color - agrees to give you a room. It would cost you 3 singuluses per night. You know that he had overpriced that dirty piece of lifespace, but the time is late and guards are already patroling the streets, and they are striving to catch you and accuse you of violation of curfew.
((By the way, how much money have you got?))

Caerwyn
You find a bench at the square and try to enjoy the buzz of the city - but that doesn't work. Alexander tries to tell some jokes, but you've alredy heard them. The time seems to slow down just to drive you bored, if not mad.
Finally, the clock on the tower of City Hall begin to strike. you head to the bar - it is filled, what is strange - it is the middle o workday right now. You have a closer look at the visitors - those seem to be miners, who finished their night shift hours ago and still celebrating that. Bartender is a dwarf with a marvellous beard, but completely bald head. He is stnding at his desk and cleans the big glass mug with a piece of cloth.

UltraValican
You run across the streets of dwarven city with all the speed your legs can provide and finally get to the trucks just in time to jump on your place near Yaro - no time to see Zacharia, unfortunately. You close the door and stare forward through the front window - the trucks seem to be filled with stuff, even after your yesterday sellings.
Yaro still stinks with alcohol. You open the window to ventilate the cabin. It barely helps. However, Yaro seems to bу completely sober and in good mood.

Harry Baldman
After you and Kathryn have a seat, halfling sits to his chair in front of his desk and adresses to you:
 - Greetings, miss Kathryn, mister Yellowtoe. My name is Kollin Barrow, and I am head of the personell department of our Guild, as you could read on the sign of my door. Our doorkeeper, Mr. Wallenwood, informed me that you are seeking for a job under authority of our Guild. With all the respect, all I can offer for now is a contract. Here it is, have a look.
He extracts two quite thick stacks of papers and puts it in front of you on his table.

Patrick Hunt
[4] Stupid piece of fat seems to understand you at last. Not completely, but someidea seems to penetrate his skull.
 - Well, yes, maybe. How many people do you need and what kind of them?

"If you can give me a copy of the inner armies total numbers I can work out what we can afford to send with me.

You should be aware the enemy has powerful mages as well as dragons so a frontal assault is going to be horrific at best, if you'll allow it I have a way to drastically increase our odds.
