Var - I am new to DF - Questions
« on: December 13, 2013, 02:10:03 pm »

FYI... I plan to keep this thread going for the questions that I have along the way.

Hi, I started playing DF about 3 days ago. I think that I'm really going to like it. I do have a few questions though.
  • Can I set Invasions to 'off ' using LNP to get setup a bit (since I don't what I'm doing yet) then turn Invasions back 'on'?
  • How does a dwarf control an animal? i.e. Placing dogs at the entrance
  • Is it best to save wood to build workshops and other items like bolts and make items like tables, chairs, and beds out of stone?
  • I read that it is better to store seeds in bags. Where do I make the bags and then store them in bags only?
  • How do I choose to cook ale roast? The only options that I see are Simple Meal, Lavish Meal, etc...
  • Are crossbows the best option? Or do I need to make axe dwarves and spear dwarves too?
  • How are the Plump Helmet Seeds generated?
[li]After items are traded to me, how do I use them? i.e. more Plump Helmet Seeds.
[/li][/list]
My 1st attempt was utter failure from the begining.
The second attempt got a little farther.
The third attempt I ended up with 57 beards that ended up starving :(

I know these questions are all over the place but, that's kinda how DF has scrambled my mind so far. Thanks in advance for any help that is offered.

1. I'm quite sure that you can.
2. There are different ways: You could chain an animal with a chain or rope to a certain spot. You can also use zones, in this case a pasture, which is a special zone, to place animals.
3. Depends, if you have lots of wood it doesn't really matter. Furniture is ususally made of stone (because you will have many stones); beds can only be wooden.
4. Bags can be made from cloth or leather. You can buy cloth, leather, or bags from the caravan. Cloth is made from plant thread, wool, or silk. Leather is made from butchered animals at a tanner workshop.
To store seeds in bags, make a special stockpile for seeds only and forbid barrels on it.
5. You can only choose three types of meals: With 2, 3, or 4 ingredients. Your dwarfs choose, which food they use.
6. Crossbows are good for defense, but you certainly want melee dwarfs too.
7. A seed is generated when a plant is eaten or processed or brewed. Cooked plants don't yield seeds.
8. All traded stuff goes to your stockpiles or remains at the depot, which is an infinite stockpile. Your dwarfs will fetch anything necessary both from stockpiles or the depot.

How do I choose to cook ale roast? The only options that I see are Simple Meal, Lavish Meal, etc...
A roast is a Lavish Meal, which simply means it takes four ingredients.

The dwarves typically choose ingredients themselves, but you can restrict their options so that they pick only the ingredients you want.

There are several ways to do that. You can open the kitchen menu (z->kitchen), and forbid cooking/brewing of stuff. You can also link stockpiles to the kitchen, in which case the dwarf will only use ingredients that are stored in those specific stockpiles (so you make an ale stockpile and a solid ingredient stockpile, and press q->give to workshop option). Or you can open the z menu and manually forbid all food items except the specific four ingredients (this is mostly used in extremely rare cases, like when you get a huge stack of dragon meat and want to make something special with it).

Another tip I can offer is that you don't need barrels or pots in your food stockpiles. In fact they cause some minor bugs.

1: yes

5: by influencing distance from the kitchen/forbidding other stuff you can make them use various ingredients before others, but usually they only use booze/liquids if nothing else is available

6: Marksdwarfs are the easiest to train (on life targets, the range seems a bit buggy) and safest to use usually, but there are some monsters that need to be physically hacked apart which requires axes or swords.

I would suggest leaving invaders turned on.  They won't show up anyway until your population increases, and even then they start out small.

Welcome to DF.  You wouldn't be the first to play several short lived fortresses in order to get the hang of things.

I'm not familiar with any such bugs.  I allow barrels in all of my food stockpiles except for seed stockpiles, and the one plant stockpile that accepts from anywhere and is positioned right next to the farms and gives to all the other special plant stockpiles by their respective workshops.  (Workshop/stockpile linking is extremely complex and you'll need to develop your own design as you go along.  It's still a work in progress for me.)

More literally, food that's stored without barrels or pots causes bugs.  Flies, to be precise. ;)

I'd recommend restricting the types of food in most food stockpiles.  Most importantly, don't let lye be stored in any stockpile; lye in a stockpile is known to cause trouble when you try to make soap out of it later.

One such bug prevents dwarves from using liquid ingredients when there are solid ingredients stored in barrels.

which only matters much with honey and boozecooking. Hardly a bug that makes or breaks the game for a new player

Keep your seeds in a seperate stockpile that only allows seeds and turn barrells down to zero with Shift-E.

Reason is that a single barrel holds a LOT of seeds, but when a dwarf goes to grab a seed to store it, instead of doing the logical thing and getting the seed and taking it to the barrel, he grabs the barrel and takes it to the seed, picks up the seed and puts the seed in the barrel, then takes the barrel back to your stockpile.
The entire time this is happening, your farmers are complaining that you don't have any seeds. It doesn't stop the farmers from working, but it does create an enormous amount of spam in your announcements and can make you miss something important, like your boozemaker running out of pots. Of course your boozemaker will simply quit working until you retask him, so you can break your fort by missing that announcement without ever knowing why.

A single 3x3 stockpile is more than enough for plump helmets. I like to keep seperate stockpiles for the important (non dye) plants so I can glance and see what's going on instead of having to check for them every so often. I also seperate the grown food by type instead of clumping it all together, but that's just me.

To store prepared meals (easy, lavish etc) I like to make a seperate stockpile away from the farms and close to the dining room that has everything blocked and prepared foods enabled. (I think it's U for prepared food).

It will help you keep an idea of what your stocks look like if you seperate your booze and your food as well.

Pots are better than barrels for booze. They weigh less and hold more than barrels, and you can make pots from stone so you don't waste wood on food storage.

Turning off invasions is probably not a bad idea for your first few playthoughs. Creating a military is stupidly complex. Like to the extreme. Nothing is more frustrating than your fortress disintegrating around your ears because you spend hours trying to prepare for an invasion and still can't get your marksdwarves to pick up the right ammo (or any ammo at all) or to realize that the squad you have been training for two years hasn't done any training at all and now you have a dozen cave dragons supporting trolls and goblins. Better to bring a mechanic and build traps or lock yourself in, killing the invaders just isn't worth the hassle at the beginning. Not to mention the extensive infrastructure that a good military requires. A large hospital with all the plaster, traction benches, beds, tables, crutches, splints, dedicated medics, a well, soap, buckets...plus the barracks and the furniture they require, keeping the soldiers fed and happy while they train and patrol, making sure they have access to and carry the right equipment..go ahead and make your rangers marksdwarves, you will regret it. Go ahead and make your legendary woodchopper an axedwarf. It all amounts to epic amounts of fail until you really get the hang of a fortress with no military requirements. All it takes is one death on the field to wipe out all the time and effort you put into making the fortress. One death of the husband of a marginally unhappy wife sends her into a tantrum in which she destroys a drawbridge trapping all your dwarves in the wrong place, leading them to increased unhappiness because they get hungry and thirsty or slaughtered, which causes them to tantrum and go insane and start killing everything in sight.....

It's really not worth it.
