Since the unification wars ended a hundred years ago, the outer rim has been longing for it's independence. There have been many rebellions, but all had failed. Revolts were brutally put down, any request for mercy brutally ignored. Nevertheless, it was our own disunity that was our greatest weakness. Some houses betrayed us, siding with the core world in exchange for the right to command over us. Even our greatest plans were doomed to fail.
In the end, our Salvation, and that what brought an end to the Core Alliance, was a ghost from the last war. A weapon build by the Alliance itself, and intended to obliterate the Rim Federation. A last resort, a weapon so brutal that no one dared to use. Or that was the plan, at least.
It was a virus, a bioweapon the like of which humanity had never seen before. It devastated the Inner core systems, reducing entire planets to massive graveyards. Each day, billions died. In the end, the Jump network was disabled, and all contact with the core worlds was lost. Alliance military consolidated itself around loyal houses, but without back-up and without organization they could not maintain their grip on the system. It seemed a new age of freedom was upon us.
However, not even the shutdown of the Jump network could save us from the virus. Devastating measures were taken to curb it's spread, but nothing could be done. Many perished, and all hope seemed lost.
I don't know how, but one ship managed to find the cure, hidden in a wreck deep within uncharted space. Neither ship nor crew ever returned from that mission, but their last transmission saved our lives. The plague was stopped, and though many died, the rim worlds survived.
That Dark Decade is now almost 20 years after us. Interstellar travel has been restored, though the majority of the jump network still remains unusable. Planets are being recolonized, lives are being rebuild. Solutions are found for old problems, and it appears that a true golden age is now upon us.
Yet progress also brings tension. The outer rim has not forgotten the years of repression put upon them by the Core nations, and their associates. Additionally, tensions are rising over the ownership of lost worlds, ships and other installations abandoned to the plague. Piracy still remains a problem, as former militias now turn their sights against new targets.
Set a good 20-30 years after the original game, the game will still continue on the major paths of the previous game. It retains almost all elements of the previous games, though it streamlines some elements. Individual Characters still exists, and I will try to put more effort in resolving their actions. A new and more comprehensive spaceship system should make it more easy for players to perform a variety of activities, while freeform actions will remain a priority. This is a suggestion game.
The game itself centers around the adventures of spaceship and it's crew.
