Let's NPC a Game?
« on: December 13, 2013, 06:51:03 am »

I was reading Living in Oblivion where the player, instead of going on a grand adventure, simply lives life in the game world as though he were an NPC [for the most part].

I was wondering if any of you had tried something similar and in what game if you had. Furthermore does this count as more role-playing than most other versions of playing or no?

Shouldn't this be in another forum?

And that children is why you should always check which tab you're doing things in.

I would think that would be boring to be honest, which may be why this guy abandoned "Living in Oblivion".

That being said, a long time ago, I did this while playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarania of Time. The first time I played as an NPC was because I didn't really know how to beat Gohma, so I just wandered around Kokiri Forest and the Lost Woods.

The second time I played as an NPC was after collecting the three stones, and this was because I realized that continuing with the plot would doom Hyrule to rule by Ganon. I would rather prefer preventing Ganon's reign of terror than to stop it. So I just wandered around Hyrule, completing sidequests and exploring.

I vaguely remember NPCing for quite some time in Vault City (Fallout 2) and trying to move around with caravans only (not really succesful because the caravans seemed to have stopped spawning after several courses leaving me stuck in VC).

I NPC'd a taxi driver and policeman in some of the early GTA games.

I NPC'd as a random stalker living in Bar in Shadow of Chernobyl. Surprisingly fun!

Nah, it's just that in most RPGs you play a more interesting, unusual role!

That said, people playing RPGs tend to do whatever comes to mind, rather than trying to put themselves in the mindset of the character. So it's going to be more conscious roleplaying than most.

In most CRPGs I roleplay a Thief hoarder. I go into people's houses and rifle through their drawers, pickpocket anyone with pockets until there's nothing left, grab any furniture I can pick up, and put everything in a single central place.

For the longest time I would play Morrowind with a "scour the land" attitude, mostly selling everything to shops that don't eliminate old stock so I could always buy it back. Then I started to realize most things aren't worth taking, so I ended up grabbing only the stuff that was worth at least 10 monies per item and also worth at least 10 monies per pound. Like soap.

That way I also wouldn't make every dining room barren because I had taken all the dishware. But man, you put a limeware platter on a shelf and it's gonna be gone.

I would collect certain things too. Like dwemer artifacts and equipment, limeware anything, grand soul gems, moon sugar and skooma. Never sell that stuff.

Would be interesting to go through a CRPG roleplaying a legit adventurer who didn't pick up moss off the ground or steal people's mugs.

In skyrim, I always collected embalming equipment and skulls. So many skulls. Troll skulls, people skulls, you name it.

I should have also dragged a body into my house to lay upon my table as if I were an embalmer, would have completed the atmosphere.

I've tried this before! It feels weird at first because that's not how the game is designed, but it can be pretty fun~

We need to find an MMORPG and organize a group of Bay12ers to... Walk around and be as ordinary as possible.
