Outside the fortress, the marsh was hot and humid. At night, owls could be seen flying between the palms, and the distant roars of lions could be heard in the distance, but by day nothing stirred. The only noise on these hot summer days were the wild beehives, buzzing in the harsh sunlight. But inside the walls of Craftrazors away from the oppressive summer heat it was always cool and comfortable, unless you worked the forge.

Kamikaze pumped the bellows on the forge, braced herself against the blast of firy heat radiating from the forge. Another work order had come in; the local militia had a new recruit, and he needed a suit of armor before he would be allowed to fight for the fledgeling outpost. Using a set of well-used tools, she expertly pulled a rough blank of glowing hot metal from the forge. Maneuvering it onto an anvil, she began to shape the rapidly cooling metal.

Kamikaze had been a smith for most of her life. While she had talent, she was poor, and could never afford to get a higher education at the prestigous Smith's Guild. She produced armor for the common soldiery, those who never amassed enough fame to be able to use the great
masterpieces of the legendary armor-smiths of the mountainhomes. She knew countless soldiers who had fallen in the wars against the orcs had done so wearing her armor.

The metal began to take shape under her hammer, and she dunked it into a vat of cold water. Some time later, after hours of bolting, polishing, and last-minute adjusting, she held up the completed helm to the light of a lantern nearby. She smiled; it was a fine helmet, and it would block some nasty blows before buckling. It would keep it's wearer alive. But still it could be better, and she would learn to make it better. The fortress was subsidizing their more talented dwarves' education, and her fees to join the Smith's guild would be paid. For all her life, she admired and emulated the great armoring masters, and was determined to join them one day.

This is why she had come to Craftrazors, taking her enigmatic husband and youngest child with her. Such a small fortress wouldn't attract the best of the armorers from the mountainhomes, and here she could ply her craft to the best of her ability. There might be room for her to grow into one that would be engraved on the walls for generations. She took another bar of copper from the stockpile, and prepared the forge to heat it into shape. If she was going to use the finest materials and the best facilities, she would have to earn it.

Ah, summertime in Dwarf Fortress. I dunno about you guys, but I'm ready for magma!

I begin researching the red-hot rock-juice, and raise some more money to buy the warpstone I'll need.

Ah, Kamikaze is inducted into the Smith's Guild.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A wave of migrants turns up. Nothing too notable, aside from a decent suturer who joins the medical team.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Speaking of which, Crazybones gets to work on getting Vabalokis back on her feet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And now for the first Warpstone Experiment!

HA HA HA! THEY CALLED ME A FOOL! I'LL SHOW THEM WHO THE FOOL IS!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

IT LIVES! BWA HA HA HA HA!

Now, with MY CREATION! We can get started in earnest.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The magmaling is in place, and Meph gives it the order.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And without a hitch (except for a little bit of spillage, oops) the deed is done.

While all this was going on, I send the militia down into the caves to escort some woodcutters.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And they found a narrow passage winding through the rock.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Another time, maybe. I want to secure the first layer first, or at least as secure as one can make it.

Migshark is inducted into the Merchant's Guild.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I intend to groom his negotiator stat, which should hopefully help our weapon purchases have a higher quality. That is how it works, right? If anyone knows for certain, that'd be great. He'll also be the fort's broker.

We drop some money on Urist's Steel Emporium.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But who's that up the hallway? It's Vabalokis!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

She's back on her feet, but not without lasting effects. Nerves in both of her hands were severed, and she is having trouble grasping objects, which will hinder her skills. Fortunately, I know just the thing.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

All of her wounds are instantly healed by the power of song.

The last sunset of the summer sinks below the horizon.

Excellent. We have magma, that most important of resources. Now we can really begin exploiting the caves. I already installed new magma-based forges, and next season we will research the crucible, metallurgist, and great forge. I'm also installing a toolmaker's shop in hopes of researching machinery and coin-minting. We can already directly smelt gold coins, but the coin mint will let us do so without slowing down our smiths, and we'll be wanting the bulk gold if we're going to caste the military. Very soon now, we will begin the manufacture of steel, brass and welded cobalt for research, technological, and military use respectively. We'll be producing armor in bulk, so I'll be able to field a larger military. I also hope to get a crystal glass industry going, and am digging out rooms for an academy of magic and for more mundane libraries. Oh, and I almost forgot, Teelox has become a legendary miner.

He have 1000 gold, and 5000 silver.

Here's yer thoughts.

Well done with the magmaling. I was so sure you were trying for a FB, but instead you made your own lake of magma. :)

Nope, and you're nowhere close. Not much call for masonry in this fortress.

Turning someone into a musician (or other caste) heals all their wounds? I learn something new every day.

Bravo, and keep them coming. These rock! <3

I think it's the transformation that does it, it seems to be similar to when a dwarf transforms into a were-creature.

The story segments are quite nice, Mosey. You misspelled fiery, but my compliments nonetheless. If you'd be willing to dwarf me, I'd appreciate it.

almost all military dwarves only remember waking up with some pain at the back of their head and receiving some water...
what is mosey not telling us? i smell some evil conspiracy... why was the militia disabled? what was in that water everyone received?

I'd be fine with that.  My dwarfs number one positive thought modifier is simply "fire."  I'm hoping I get some basic military training for the militia.  The love of fire, strength from working the forge, and some basic know-how of the weapons I make could make me one of the last survivors of a tantrum spiral or invasion.
