How many people are created at world gen?

I'd also be interested in how realistic the population growth is, and the caps and so on.

Depends entirely on the size of your map, number of sites, etc etc. There is some rudimentary respect being paid to food supply, so while I'm sure I wouldn't call it realistic it is at least being simulated to some degree that makes sense. As far as I'm aware there are no hard caps, just how long you're willing to let things chug.
This might be better suited to DF Gameplay Questions or DF General Discussion.

Well if COD players all have ADHD, and Minecrafters autism, then what do DF players all have?

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Advanced_world_generation#Population_cap_after_civ_creation

I haven't actually graphed it, but the population growth function looks similar to log(x) or sqrt(x)  On second thought, it's probably closer to a sigmoid function.  (I could be completely wrong here; this is just my intuitive feel from watching worldgen.)

As far as modelling growth and realism, there is some effort made in that respect, but it is still fairly "simple" (for lack of a better word).  AFAIK, the main factors inhibiting growth (other than caps) are age, war and starvation.

How slow does it get without the pop caps, and how fast does pop rise? Is the number of civ's for a given race always the max value?

According to legends, something like 10 per civilization.

I'm generating an unculled, uncapped 10k year history 64x64 vanilla world ATM, but it may take a while.  Meanwhile, for your viewing pleasure, here's a chart of the population growth in another world of mine.

I generated the data for this chart from the world history XML dump, and culling was enabled during worldgen in that particular case.  Also, it's a 32x32 world with lots of megabeasts and titans and savagery and such, so it's extremely hostile.  The 500 starting population may be that wildlife.  Also, I suspect the apparent die-off at the end is either culling or battle.  I wouldn't pay too much attention to it, since it looks so anomalous.  What is does show is that population growth starts off as exponential.  The 10k year history should be much more interesting.  I'll try to be a bit more thorough with it; this was just a quick and dirty proof of concept.

For your viewing pleasure, I finished coding up a much prettier chart and report generator.  I also found the bug that caused that sudden drop at the end of my previous chart.  (Entities that had no death year weren't being counted.)

I wasn't able to do a 64x64, but this is a 10,000 years in a 32x32 world.  Give it a minute or two to load.

Thanks, the chart is good reading. Forgive me, my memory and my shitty loading times, but is it the elves or the "others" who climb to the top of the chart?
