Which is part of why I wanted those cataclysms seperate. Annoying.

Just one thing: the wording of rule three and four might point out that the island around the continent are unharmed by the cataclysms. Leftovers of earlier civilisations might remain here...
I like this idea. Lost civilizations are so much fun...

Which have been evolving for three more cycles than humans did.
Two. And the proper term is "developing". And each cylce would be able to build a bit on the previous ones.

Which is part of why I wanted those cataclysms seperate. Annoying.
What is?

Why developing? Also, do we do one more round of Palette or do we start? I'd vote for a start, I think we got a nice Palette, shaping thing but broad enough to let us have fun.

Three out of six. One more vote and we can go.

Why developing?
Evolution implies a longer, slower, biological process.
Development is actively improving one's society.
It's a semantics thing.

Three out of six. One more vote and we can go.
We can go.

Except palette rule 6 state that evolution ( the biological process) is freakingly fast due to magic. :)

Edit: So, now, it's Rhyme's turn to choose the Focus and create a Scene and an Event, or an Event and a Period, right?

It is. I'll start as soon as my classes are over (5 hours from now, give or take 1)

EDIT: Had some free time before classes, first period and event created.

1. I didn't read that well. That's...kinda silly. What kind of cataclysm would reduce life to bacteria, and if it goes through billions of years of evolution in a few centuries, that's a bit over 15 million years per year, so each generation of rodents would be about the "distance" between the Rupelian and today. Human generations would cover roughly the entire time complex life has existed on Earth. Different subspecies than the parent? Heck, the kids could be different genera from the parents! Plus, unless we're directing evolution somehow, speeding it up doesn't work well. You would have to increase mutation rates in general, which would cause a large increase in things like birth defects, early death, cancer, and so on. Not to mention that it is completely unneeded, given the number of possible cataclysms which would only destroy civilizations while leaving most life intact, especially if we add in a little divine intervention.
In other words, it tries to remove to need for a creator re-making the entire world every cycle by adding an even weirder bit of magic to try and handwave it. Ugh. I think I'm just going to pretend the first few centuries of each cycle don't exist. Depending on how major this is...ugh.

2. Development involves technological and infrastructure improvement. Evolution involves biological change. The two are unrelated.

I believe no one wanted to go into hardcore biology. But I have to say that maybe the evolution speed should be reduced. I mean, the cataclysms don't have to kill ALL life.

Then why did they bother with the increased evolution rate?

because sentients and probably a bunch of other things get annihilated. Honestly I read it as "sentients magically evolve back in 300 years so we can get on interesting stuff in the 700 years before the next cycle."

If I'm reading Sheb's palette thing correctly, the increased evolution rate is due to magic and the influence of supernatural beings. So it's more like Intelligent Design than classical evolution.

Exactly! 300 years to get some interesting species going and then the supernatural beings stop their tinkering of the different races.

EDIT: For the IC thread, we're supposed to post an event and scene, right?
