Rollers won't pull the minecart out of the magma
« on: December 12, 2013, 01:04:22 am »

I must be making a simple mistake.  I've done some searches, and can't figure this out.

I'm attempting to bring Magma up ~85 z levels.  I want to learn how to use rollers to pull carts out of liquid.

Cart gets pushed and dropped 85ish levels directly onto Rollers (highest speed).
Rollers extend to ramp
Rollers take cart to ramp.
Cart does not go up Ramp, even in an empty channel (no magma yet).

I've tried adding a 2nd cart.  Does not push 1st cart up ramp.
I've tried adding Rollers on z level above overlapping ramp.
I've tried not including ramp with rollers.

What am I missing?

Is there track under the roller? Rollers over non-track floor will not affect minecarts.
Is the ramp engraved with track? Carts ignore non-track ramps.
Does the roller have power?

Thank you for responding - Just checked my save.

I see engraved track under the rollers.
I see engraved track on the ramp.
The rollers  (S>N) have power.  The cart moves 8 tiles north to the ramp, but not up it.

Do I need a separate 1x1 roller on the ramp, or does one 1x9 that covers the ramp work?

Would the cart get stuck because it is derailed after the giant drop?  Do I have to do something to re-rail it before rollers push it correctly?  I attempted to have the rollers shove it over 2 impulse ramps before hitting the ramp, but it still stops on the ramp without climbing out.

I also have tried medium speed  rollers in case the highest speed is too much power.

It continues to stop on the ramp.

You mentioned that this doesn't work either with or without magma, so the cart really should go up the ramp if it can use the ramp at all. A couple more things to double-check:

1. Is the ramp actually usable (i.e. not floored over on the z-level above)?
2. Does the track extend across the track, or might you have simply carved track that ends on the ramp?

That is, if the cart is supposed to move N-S, loo(k) at the ramp and it should say something like "Track Ramp (NS)" -- NOT "Unusable Ramp" or "Track Ramp (N)".

I was just discovering the exact problem you mention with the ramp after re-reading the wiki:  I've not noted this until a moment ago:

The carving of natural ramps is a little more confusing: to carve a two-way track on a ramp (natural only, does not work on constructed ramps), you must designate the track starting on the ramp and one square beyond in the direction you want the track to go. For the side of the ramp square you want to head upward, there must be either a natural or constructed wall in the square next to it, otherwise the game assumes you are trying to carve it on the same level.

It appears I've been carving all of my ramps incorrectly.... for months and months.  Time to add magma!
