(I'm a little confused. Are we reacting to the nightmares, or do we just do whatever and that'll be the morning? I'm going to assume the former and post that way.)

Floyd rubbed his forehead with the heels of both hands. This wasn't going to do at all. He had to get some sleep; there was too much to do tomorrow for him to be tired all day. He wasn't even a night person. It's just nerves, old man. Don't let it get to you.

...But it was getting to him. Mary-Anne was hogging the blankets, and that wasn't like her, either. ...It's just 'new house' jitters. An old place like this, a superstitious man's liable to think any number of things. Thing's'll be back to normal in a few days. He sat up and shifted to the edge of the bed, placing his feet on the floor and his elbows on his knees. Maybe it would be OK to take care of a few things. Just a few things, until he was tired enough to get some sleep. Work off the edge.

For example, he was starting to get a bit of a stomach. He hadn't been working out as much as he used to. It wasn't bad yet, but he was barely on the wrong side of forty, and if he let that get out of hand he'd be bad off in ten years. He could work on that. Or he could go down to the garage, work on the car a little more. There was still a lot of work to be done there... but he didn't want to wake the family up. Hmm. He could soundproof the garage at some point. Too bad he didn't have the materials right now.

Materials. There was something he could do. Maybe this place had some glass on hand already. He could go look for that so he could take care of Garen's window, find some tools around, get everything set up to take care of that. And if they didn't have glass, well, he could find something else to occupy his time. He was never much for books, but he could always kill some time in the library. Reading did have a habit of making him sleepy. He yawned, scratched his chest, and got to his feet. Yeah. It was time to take care of some things.

Floyd looks in the Garage, Gardener's Shed (briefly), and the Cellar (also briefly) for panes of glass he could use to fix Garen's window, as well as tools appropriate for the job. After he's done searching, if he can't sleep, he'll head to the Library and read a random book.

Round 2: Settling In

Mary-Anne eyes the hallway carpet with an air of critical dissatisfaction.

After breakfast, she had followed up on something she'd noticed late the night before; namely, wispy cobwebs in the upstairs hallway. It's not just the hallway; there's a fine layer of dust in every room up here, particularly the Library, and every dark corner seems to have a spidery squatter. Her mouth twists in distaste. Apparently, it was too much to hope that the regular custodial staff would tidy up before they left for the winter. It seems Mary-Anne gets to spend her first day in the Mansion giving everything a good cleaning.

Without turning her head, Mary-Anne reaches behind her and snags Maryn by the arm. "Going somewhere, Maryn?" she asks pointedly.

The sneaky child gives a guilty start at how quickly she was caught, then flashes a wide, dissembling smile. "Dad said that I could go play outside now that the rain stopped!"

"Mhm." Mary-Anne sniffs. "Just don't go too far; you need to do your flashcards in an hour."

"But Mooooooom!" Maryn protests. "I'm not even at school! I have all day to do those!"

"No buts." Mary-Anne says firmly. "Flashcards in an hour, before we have lunch."

Maryn heaves a put-upon sigh. "Okaaay. Can I go now?"

"Yes." A short response, but in the time it took Mary-Anne to provide it Maryn had already bolted down the stairs. "And be careful!" Mary-Anne called out.

Mary-Anne Objective Set!

"Okay Mom! Love you!" Maryn calls back upstairs, not breaking her stride. Running into the Foyer, she tugs on her fluffy boots and scrambles into her equally fluffy coat before bursting out the front door. The air is cold, but still; Maryn breathes out noisily, watching her breath mist and rise away into the clear blue sky. Everything smells crisp and clean.

Maryn looks around for something to do, wondering if she should go back for some toys. There's lots of room to run around out here, and she remembered Dad saying something about neat buildings and things out behind the house. She can see him talking with Garen over by the Garage, but decides against going to ask him about it; he can't tell her not to explore things if she doesn't ask first!

Maryn Objective Set (kinda)

"Tell you what, champ." Floyd says, stamping in his boots for warmth. "I've got a folder with a list of everything in the Mansion up in my room. If there's any glass to put in the window, it'll be on that list."

"And you can fix it then?" Garen asks hopefully.

"I'll do my best. I should have all the tools to do the job." Floyd snorts in the cold. "I'm going to go check on the tools in the shed, give everything a once-over. Part of the job, and all. If you find the glass, let me know, and I can install it this afternoon."

"Sounds good." Garen nods, then purposefully strides off toward the Mansion. It shouldn't be too hard to find the windowpanes, right? They're probably sitting right out in the open, and the summer crew was just too lazy to install them.

Harpo perks up from where Harpo had been resting outside. Harpo had enjoyed a good run this morning and had smelled many things and had just been feeling the sun on Harpo's cold nose, but now there are many people outside! Floyd man and Garen boy are talking, and now Maryn girl is running outside too!

Harpo whines in some worry. Harpo is more familiar with this place now, and Harpo is definitely knows more about the outside than anyone else, but now the family is splitting up. That is no good as Harpo sees things, since even in the sunlight there is a non-zero chance of raccoon attack.

Harpo is confident, though. Harpo is a good defender. Garen boy seems to be heading back inside, but Harpo will make sure Floyd man and Maryn girl come to no harm this day!

hmm, I want to stay out as long as I can, else the flashcards...
I know what I'll do!
Self-objective: The PLAN!
Step 1) Grab anything I'll want later from inside now, before Mom gets flashcard-itchy. That weird book for starters, and a notepad and something to write with to map the hedge-maze.
Step 2a) Go to the observatory and check it out! see if there's anything interesting!
Step 2b) Go to the hedge maze and map it! be the only person who can't get lost inside!
Step 3a) Hide from Mom! Noooooooooo flashcards! Nonononono!
Step 3b) Read book while hiding! It wont require me to make noise to read it, so it won't break my cover, and it seemed really neat last night!
Dash back inside, pick up the book out of the library and pocket it, then run on over to the study and grab a notepad and a pencil or pen. Don't bother being sneaky, Mom isn't out to get me.... yet!

Harpo knew that, of the two, the one most likely to be judged as a tasty, undefended treat by the raccoons as well as the one most likely to find any raccoons in the first place was the Maryn one. And since the Mary-Anne woman was not there to guard her litter, the task fell to Harpo!

Floyd eyed the Gardener's Shed. It was either go in there, or stay out here in the cold. And he had to go in there, since that's where the tools were. He couldn't explain why he felt uneasy about going in, though. After a moment he sighed and pushed open the door. Uneasy feeling or not, you gotta get it done. And the sooner it's done the sooner you can get to work. So work, Floyd.

Floyd enters the Gardener's Shed and looks for the tools. He also makes a point to check on the snow blower.

Garen followed his father. Maybe, his father had a floorplan and he could use it to look for a room likely to have windowpanes? After all, Garen wasn't Maryn, he couldn't explore a house all by himself like that. But there'd be a maintenance storage room or something right?
"Dad, do you have some sort of floor plan? I'm looking for a room with spare windowpanes."

[SeriousConcentrate]

"Yeah, the plans're in the manila envelope, like I told you about. Should be on the dresser on the left side of the bed when you come in the master bedroom. If I had to guess before you looked, though, I'd say spare panes ought to be either in here, the garage, the cellar, or the attic. Seems like the places people would put that sort of thing."

[Powder Miner]

"Alright, thanks!" This might go very smoothly. With that floormap, Garen thought, he should be able to maneuver his way with ease to what he wants and get it. Awesome.
Garen goes to go retrieve the manila envelope.

   Mary-Anne had never much liked spiders. She didn't know exactly when the dislike had taken root, but after the dream... It was clear that her dislike of the eight legged freaks was flowering. Which, considering the state of the house, was really no surprise. Mary-Anne had never been immensely influenced by popular psychology, but it seemed reasonable that the reason she was having nightmares of spiders was due to the presence of very real spiders and and other crawlers in the house.

  Well, it was time to evict them.

Begin dusting the house and removing cobwebs. Start in the bathrooms and work widdershins around the house (bathrooms -> ballroom -> foyer -> conservatory -> etc). Bring along a blowtorch a flyswatter to goosh bugs with.
