We have iron-bearing ore. Aside from energy (magma), we need coal (wood) to make steel. And they are all near to one another. That's my excitment!

When the population grows, we can easily have steel-clad military or maybe even adamantine.

Jimboo, I meant the mayor's dining ROOM really. You misread.

And about food and booze. I'm not familiar with masterwork hard-farming. Should I focus on more farms foreseeing possible migrants? After killing the invaders, that is.

Up to you, but I wouldn't.  The Wiki pages on Farming and Fertilizer lay out all the reasons.  Harder farming isn't really harder, it 's just longer to harvest time.  A small, fertilized field planted by a experienced Planter can yield many times more than a large one tended by bumblers, which is why I Guilded your main Farmer with the precious gold coins.  Silvergoose is already set but many players (Meph, for instance) don't even bother with farming at all -- but that assumes a military to escort the caravans.

Go which ever way you want on the farms.  I am a farm fanatic, but hate fertilizer, hence my habit of building what many would consider to be too many farms.

As for digging out the adamantine, be careful :).  We have enough going on above ground.  Getting arms and armor and a properly trained militia would be good.  However, 20 dwarves is a bit light for that, but I could see getting a good crew to train if you can spare them.  Then if we ever get more migrants, we'll be set for splitting squads and training them up from the previous bunch.

Goblins do drown, trolls do not, at least not for a long time.  I have used drowning traps on goblins before.  Orcs, I am not sure.  But if you can find a way to lure them into a trap, go for it.  Or better, just dig a drop chute into the magma tube.  I'm pretty sure the orcs won't survive swimming in that!

Othsal, the mayor, stood by the door leading to Uvash’s quarters, the crazed apostle of Armok. Rumors say he is a vampire, to never be released.

Knocking the door, Othsal asks “Uvash, you still there?”

All she hears is a babbling:

-Arm blan dig deei!

-I can’t hear ya.

-Armok says DIG DEEPER.

He repeats the phrase again and again. Sometimes it’s clearly heard, sometimes it’s only babble.

Without thinking much, Othsal runs to the meeting hall where some dwarves are drinking.

- Miners, DIG DEEPER!

Meanwhile, constructing the windmill to power the screw pumps, Asen decides to stop and take a look at the orcs.

-Elven piss! They are fighting each other.

Thoughts from Othsal:

Mining is heavy. Near the surface the trap is being set. Deep in the earth, magma forges would be built if not for that fire elemental.

The windmill is up and running. Just yesterday the miners discovered a cavern layer with lots a fungi wood and a sweet shining magma pipe descending right into the great magma sea. We’ll have steel! They also mined a blood of Armoks.

I’ll set a squad. Urdim is already a sergeant. Another three should suffice.

A squad of four is set. Training schedule is 2 month training with two dwarf minimum, then a break.

And steel clad uniform, replacing the clothing.

The barracks will be near the temple to Armok, near a stockpile of armor and other of weapons.

Did you check why the orcs fight with mounts? Were they opposed to life?

I think they were bored.  They were all just hanging around outside and when the spiders started to breed, the Elite Orcs started using the spiderlings for target practice.  That may have ticked the mothers off.

Meanwhile, constructing the windmill to power the screw pumps, Asen decides to stop and take a look at the orcs.
(clip) The windmill is up and running.

Windmill to power what screw pumps?  If it's for the stagnant water cistern, one dorf can easily do that manually.  Are you planning to bring magma up from the pipe?  That's a lot of work and there are few labor dwarves.  Why not just tap in using a grate to keep out the imps and such and have one starter smelter and forge at the lower level?  Putting a pot or two of booze and a bed nearby helps keep workers from wandering off when they get thirsty or tired.  That would make it easy to coin the remaining revealed gold to summon the legion and you already have all those steeloaks for armor material.  When research allows a blast furnace, you can use those hundreds of planks in inventory for charcoal.

FUN arrived

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It immediately engaged the seven war giant blight bats near. The bird mutilated two of the bats and the remaining five fled off the map.

The orc army charge. The megabest could not handle being outnumbered.

18th Felsite, 75, Late Spring. One less megabeast in the world.

26th, Hematite. Waterfall is lovely. Side note: do not forget to wall the cistern again, almost flooded the fortress; luck that I’ve set a floodgate to control the level.
Not much time later, Grimmash was struck by a fey mood and claimed a craftsdwarf workshop.
By the way, see the waterfall in the meeting hall.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

He screams for yarn cloth, cut gems and raw clear glass, rock, logs, bones.

Sorry Grimmash, I think you will die.

The orcs went to their homes. Now giants are in their place, and are mounted in mastodons no less.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And I almost built a way into the fortress while draining the lake to fill the watery grave. Had to close de floodgate.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Lots of FUN potential in my turn, but nothing funny really happened.

It’s Autumn and Grimmash went insane, running around babbling.

By mid-autumn the magma forges are running.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Stockpiles are one level above. I plan on walling the place, Fire Elementals lurking deep in the sea...

Rain, soon the water grave will be full. The giants retreat when a force of beak wolves arrives. It seems our enemies are taking turns on this never ending siege.

Winter comes. The watery grave is filled, time to put it to a test. I fear the worst

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I did not see any tagged "opposed to life". Maybe they died quickly? Becoming opposed to life out of boredom, is it possible?

Windmill to power what screw pumps? (...)

Windmill to power two screw pumps making the waterfall, to cheer up dwarven spirit.

Who will be the next overseer? I should be able to finish my turn friday night.

Well, if no one else signs up for overseer I will take it. Again, I would prefer to not recycle overseers though, so please, if you can sign up do so.

Sad face.  I am dead.  Ah well, so be it.  At this rate I will be surprised if any overseer survives subsequent turns.

Mensrea, are you just generally opposed to cycling overseers?  I'm just curious.

I wonder why you didnt pray for the things that Grimmash needed? The shrines can spawn all items that could possible be asked for, with the exception of shells/bones. (because these are bodyparts)

No, I just prefer to see different takes on the game, both playwise and story wise. Not that I would object to other overseers taking another turn, its more of something I would personally refrain from. That being said if any former overseers want to sign up please do.

So do I. How could I forget that? :-[
-----------------------------------

Zefon Acridtours had just hauled a bin with gold bars down to the magma forge a was going to take one more when he was stopped by Othsal.

- Stop, Zefon! Where are you going?

- I am going to haul some more bars.

- No, you are not. See that sweet red glowing right there? It is magma! Take these gold bars you just hauled, mint us some coins. I forbid you of doing anything else. You are 13 years old and will be the greatest smith amongst the living. Now go to work! We need 3000 coins for the legion.

28th moonstone, the carpenter Zeg withdraws from society and works secretively.

Now this is a critical time. It's mid-winter. 48 beak wolves lay siege. The drowning trap is ready, just a upward ramp is needed. I have the 10000 coins for the legion, but never called them before, what should I expect?

I think I'll try to thin the siegerss numbers by drowning and only then call the legion. What say you?
