Games where you build a civilisation or base?
« on: December 06, 2013, 06:46:48 pm »

I've been wanting to play some games where you build some sort of civilisation or base. Dwarf Fortress would be one and 4X's would be another. It doesn't matter what the theme is (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, etc.) So Bay 12, do you have any ideas? I'll point out now that I already play (obviously) Dwarf Fortress and I also play a lot of Civilisation so don't recommend those please.

Thanks!

Deadlock.  Take a look at my signature; I did a screenshot Let's Play of it recently.  It's an old game and it's a bit obscure.

And then there's the better known and more popular ones:

Galactic Civilizations series
Master of Orion series
Master of Magic
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Majesty

And then there's a game called Outpost 2 that I like.  It's an RTS, but with a lot more emphasis on base management.

Go crazy. Some are more city builder and some are more RTS and some are more empirey than others.

Any of the Impressions games (Caesar, Pharoah, Zeus maybe). Great city-builders focusing on the economic side of it. Available on GOG, and elsewhere on the Internet.
Outpost/Outpost 2. Science-fiction RTS/city-builder games. Currently either free or abandonware (don't remember)
Imperialism/Imperialism 2.  Empire-level games set in the Industrial or Colonial periods of Europe, respectively.
Seconding Alpha Centauri.

You can build a base as a builder and defend it from an army of knights/archers/other builders. This game has chaotic combat, is incredibly fast paced (especially in the new version), and overall a load of fun.

Any of the ANNO series.
Want modern/future?
Get anno 2070.
Want ships with sails?
Get any other game from the series.

How have you been able to operate Deadlock on modern OSes?

Also, there's always DOSBox, and if the prospect of setting it up terrifies you, D-Fend Reloaded is a program that does that for you.

If i remember well Deadlock wasn't a DOS game , so DOSBox can't help.

Holy fuck, I've been looking for that game for about 6 years, couldn't for the life of me remember the name, and everything I'd searched brought up nothing.
All of my thanks, all of them.

Rise of Nations. It's sort of like Civ but in RTS form. It even has a Risk-like "Conquer the World" mode with multiple scenarios. The Cold War and Alexander the Great scenarios are particularly good.

EDIT: Also Settlers 2. So many hours of my formative years went into building all those roads and watching the chains of people carry things along them...
