The Wizardry Series (SCREW YOU ARNIKA ROAD)
« on: December 05, 2013, 08:25:51 pm »

Just re-bought Wiz 8 on GOG, and well, I still like it 'n' loathe it for pretty much exactly the same reasons. :P

My current party has a tanky, hard - hitting Lizard Warrior, a tankish Rawulf Lord, and a slightly flimsy Dracon Alchemist up front, with a tankish Mook Ranger, a Hobbit Gadgeteer, and a super prone to death Elf Bishop in the middle.

It works well, until two people target the Bishop in one round. Then he probably dies and I get annoyed and reload.

Has anyone tried multiclassing in the game? How does it work? I'm thinking of switching my Bishop into a Mage but I do like the uncursing ability he has. :)

People who haven't played the game : Unless you walk around with your back to a wall, it's rather easy for your vulnerable centers to be violated by people with 'extended' reach, or just by surrounding you in a crescent of death. Oh, and death is hard to recover from. :P

I never played 8, but if reclassing works like it did in 6+7, your former Bishop would keep all his spells, though he'd only be able to cast them at power level 1 to start. He'd start at character level 1 with his old HP, MP, and skills as well, but would only gain minimal amounts until he hit a level he'd never been before. Oh - and all stats would drop to the minimum for the new class.

But for all I know, in Wizardry 8 Everything Changed.

Posting to watch I have logged soooo many hours in Wizardry 8.  It's on my list of desert island games.  I mean hell, I named my DF race after Dracon!

As for the multiclassing question I think you keep your stats you just have access to the unique abilities of a lv 1 of what class you switched to while losing those you switched out of.  An engineer can switch to any other class and still have the engineering skill to allow them to use gadgets, but they can't use their omnigun until they switch back, and their omnigun also won't get any stronger while they are leveling as the other class.

It seems that if it translates into a skill you can put points into during level up you keep that ability when you are another class, but you would lose things like the lord's regen, the fighter's berserk and the Valkyrie's cheat death if you are not in that specific class.  You also can't put points on level up into a skill that class wouldn't normally have.  A fighter with engineering for example can use some gadgets, but they can only gain skill with them from use(maybe), not level up points.

Take this with a grain of salt though.  I preferred single class so it's primarily secondhand.  My group was always Dracon Fighter, Human Lord, Felpurr Ninja, Elf Mage, Elf Cleric, Elf Ranger.

-
Also a little tip for you regarding formation.  You don't have to have somebody in every formation slot.  My party always had the front slot completely empty, with my "Front line guys" (the fighter and the lord) In the left and right spots, my ninja in the middle, and the cleric mage and ranger in the back.  Vi and RFS usually chilled at the sides with the beefcakes.

The open space means front row gets skipped, and anything directly in front of the party is in melee range to all 3 middle sections of the formation.  The middle is a little safer because single target damage incoming from the front will be spread to both the middle and the sides (as they are also in melee range) and the beefcakes are on the sides as any groups partially wrapping around the party will be able to melee them and only them.  Back is protected by being up against a wall in an ideal world, so nothing can get in melee range of them.

I haven't played Legend of Grimrock, unfortunately. :(

Managed to get to Trynton for the first time (omg), but then Vi went insane and I don't know how to cure her. Any ideas?

Sane mind spell should do it, but that's higher level.  If I recall correctly it wears off after a time, but I can't find anyplace to confirm.  The game isn't exactly well documented.

is wizardry 8 the hardest one of the 6,7,8 series? I believe 1-5 is considerably different.

I have not played 6 but 7 made me ragequit the game.  Like totally and completely.  That game throws ridiculous levels of instant death attacks at you, gives absolutely no hints on what you are supposed to be doing, and loves to CC the crap out of you.

I got past the T'rang section and was on my way to visit the ratkin in 7 when I decided that the game just hates me entirely too much and imported my party into 8.  That was the farthest I have ever gotten in at least 4 attempts to play through the entire game.  I usually quit at new city.

And I was playing a version my friend modded to TONE DOWN the ridiculousness of the monsters.  Wizardry 7 hates your very soul, savescumming is not only recommended, it is a requirement, every random encounter, even in the early bits of the midgame, can and will do a total party kill 1/3rd of the time.  Wiz 8 is a complete walk in the park compared to it.

I found 6 and 7 to be a bit brutal, but still had a blast with them as a kid. I don't think I ever finished 8. I really should go back and play through those again at some point.

Personally, though, I've always really enjoyed the original Wizardry game. There is just something about that simple dungeon crawl system with a whole guild full of people to pull from back in town that appeals to me.

It never wore off as it was due to disease. I managed to squeeze back to Arnika and get a Restoration potion though. :)

The game *has*, broadly, seemed to get easier past the Arnika Road section. As long as I have my back to a wall, my risk of anyone dying is probably about 10% per combat (and that's when they decide to target my central mage using nobby extended reach), which is a substantial improvement.

I remember playing Wizardry 8 as a kid. I understood the absolute basics of composing a party, but mostly i just picked whatever sounded cool.

Guess who never got past Gregor. It feels so much easier now that i know what I'm doing.

I played the demo of one of the Wizardry games, Wizardry 8 I think? I started off on a beach with a party of guys, went into a temple/fortress, got accosted by slimes and died to a big monster thing.

I liked the 1st person exploring, but those games have got it in for you.

The only thing I can think of would be the Giant's sword.  I don't remember any class requirement for it, but yea only mook are big enough to use it, and that thing hits like a train carrying a bunch of smaller trains, carrying semi trucks being driven by mutant superbees, drinking protein shakes.

I picked the 6-8th games up during the last big Steam sale. Haven't actually tried any of them yet, but they do look interesting.
