Total Extreme Wrestling 2013
« on: December 05, 2013, 03:26:35 pm »

So I've been spending most of my free time playing the heck out of this.  I don't even watch wrestling(now) or know much about it, but I have watched it during the Hulk Hogan era as a kid.  Spending my other free time reading up the Q&A thread on their forum, I've already learned so much more about wrestling terms then I'd ever care to know.

Total Extreme Wrestling 2013

This game is basically a management sim.  You can either start out as a broker or owner of one of the companies... or even start a totally brand spanking new one yourself if you set the appropriate prestige/reputation at the start of the game.   You have a lot of power in editing/adding things to the game, so this game really favors modding.
As a booker, you are subject to the goals set by the owner.  As owner, you have everything under your sole control.

At the start, you get to pick a premade character that is 'you' or even one of the non avatar characters.  Or you can go into the editor and make your own character.  Yes, you can even make 14 year old wrestling characters... (I havn't tried going lower, but I think there is a 5 year old bear somewhere in the game's roster.)

As for what product your company offers, well you can change it around so that it focuses on whatever...

Spoiler: Fun Tips (click to show/hide)

(I'm probably going to end up editing more random tips/info I pick up from trawling the Q&A thread in the game's forum.  So many questions get repeated all the time and I keep on forgetting some of the things that were said too...)

Silent_Thunder was running a Let's Play of this one, very interesting and fun reading

In the freeware thread he mentionned the version 2005 that had been released as freeware some time ago, and may be a good way to get a taste of what this serie is all about

I have plenty of fun on this older version that while not as featured as the latest release is still very interesting if you like management games .

This is a thread i can get behind, been playing the freeware version for awhile now just wish i had some money to get the new one, i really want to get a fed involved in those regional and national wars.

The game has a pretty good modding community as well with people creating real world mods and alternate universe ones (like one where the WWE fell apart after the first Wrestlemania) and some fantasy ones

Yeah I played the freeware 2005 some and then popped for 2013 after reading the Let's Play and another one on, ahhh, I think the rpg.net board?  Yeah here: http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?667429-Where-I-Play-Total-Extreme-Wrestling-2013 and http://forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?684214-Where-I-Play-Total-Extreme-Wrestling-2013-The-Saga-Continues There are a ton of great dynasty stories on the TEW site boards too.  I'm not much of a wrestling fan either, but I love management games.

My games usually stalled after a few good months of matches when I'd grow and hire a ton of great promising wrestlers, then have trouble keeping the bloated roster busy or even keeping their rivalries/storylines/stats straight.   The last try lasted the longest, I did about 40 matches over 6 months or so using the 12 cheapest wrestlers available (I called it the "Dirty Dozen Challenge"), starting with 0 popularity and $1000.  They were actually developing reasonably well, if slowly.  After the 1st size growth, I allowed hiring 2 "trainers" - Remmy Honeyman for $380 and Eve Grunge for $480.  I mean to get back to it, it's just a bit discouraging 'cause there's still so long to go to promote from Small - I think the incredibly awful economy slowed my growth (Wrestling economy was ZERO for a couple of months, ow).

Pretty decent game.  Oh and besides the freeware 2005 version, you can abuse the demo of 2008/2010/2013 a fair amount - I ran 30 matches in the month of game time it allows, that's a LOT of gaming time.  Unfortunately you don't get to see the results of the regional/national wars which only happen monthly.

I find it really, really hard to get into myself. It's just..too much information to take in to get acquainted with even a tiny league for me. Maybe my brain is disintegrating in my old age? I'm 28 now :P

There is definitely a character submitted by me in the upcoming Something Awful Let's Play thread though! Hopefully that is as big a clusterfuck as it seems to be turning into :D http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=0&threadid=3589192

Ah, interesting video that forum has got there.  I didn't bother to get past it.  (Can't see thread.)

So far, I'm a bookie for a local sized touring promotion, integrated.
I actually just modded this company in to how I want to run it, but not be too hard at the start.  It gives me room to change the product to what I really want for when the company does get bigger.  Also gives the challenge of being at the whims of a boss.

Basically, you don't make any money at all from events while you are small and local sized. (Learned that the hard way as I tried and failed to run a low sponsorship type promotion, wondering wtf I was doing wrong.  You gotta play the long game while small...)  I have not tried regional or higher yet, they seem more intimidating with a bigger roster to handle.

Currently, the tactic is keeping on 4-6 wrestlers who will be my focus/longer term contractors, they fight the most and I give em the wins to look great.  Using the Face/Heel approach, half my crew will be one or the other.  And generally, usually they will exclusively fight face vs heel, unless I use em in dark time.  (I can't afford that excess yet...)  While the rest of the line up are temps who are there to make my star wrestlers look good.  Those guys will be thrown back to the wild when I'm done with them.

Fun Tip: Touring companies are pretty decent for local, small and regional sized promotions.  Possibly a low end Cult too.  The reason is that you gain access to a new contract type, Touring.
Touring contracts are basically the same as PPA(Pay Per Appearance) contracts, but the one main difference is that if you let a touring contract expire, people will not see it negatively at all.  If you let a PPA contract expire, you won't be able to rehire that person for at least 6 months.  If you let a Touring contract expire, you can immediately rehire the person.
Being small and having cruddy income, you can't sensibly keep a huge roster on the payroll, especially if you can't afford to use em, since most contracts have a downside, plus morale issues of simply not being used.  Downsides are the minimum payment the employee will get payed per month, no matter how much you use them.

Nice to see a fellow TEW player. I'm over on the greydog forums under this name, and I stream the game also.

This game is amazing.
