Chapter One: Brought Together

Case One: Why Don’t You Come Away With Me?

A middle aged man approaches you as you pack the car. His eyes are worried and he looks left and right before speaking to you, as though he is afraid of being watched.
“I heard that you have... experience with supernatural stuff. That true? Thank god. My house... Shit is happening. The kids are scared. My wife is scared. I’m scared. Can you please come check it out?”


On the drive over the man - James Sallwort apparently - tells you a bit about the problems facing his family. Though they've lived there for the past three years, the incidents have only started ocurring in the past month. James lives with his wife Sally - who is seven months pregnant - and their children Oscar and Jennifer (7 and 4 respectively).

When James gets home each night, odd noises start up in the walls. Both Sally and James have felt as though someone is watching them when they're alone. The family feels as though they're not welcome in their own home and the stress is causing complications with Sally's pregnancy; the child has stopped kicking, whereas before it would do so at every opportunity. Sally herself is experiencing heavier-than-usual morning sickness and a doctor's appointment has been set up in the near future.

Though these are all worrying, the fact that his children have been waking at night screaming about someone watching the for the past three nights is what caused James to come looking for you all.

"When Sally had the other two kids it was touch and go, so we can't take any risks with this one! We just need you guys to check this out and tell Sally that there's nothing to worry about. She's really scared - when I left she had locked herself in the bedroom for the past five hours."


The cars pull up and two children - presumably Oscar and Jennifer - come running out to hug their father. They're followed by a subdued woman who is heavily pregnant - obviously Sally. The house seems fairly well-off.

As you get out of the car and pass through the front gate you feel an intense sensation of grief wash over you.

In the main window above you catch a glimpse of a woman's face out of the corner of your eye, but when you look again it's gone.

"Not to worry, we'll have all of this uncovered in no time at all."

Start heading toward the front door.

[Imp]

Amelia Stout waves towards the window where she thinks she saw the woman's face, smiling brightly and thinking good thoughts with as open a mind as she can imagine her mind to be.  I'm a friend and I'm here to help.  I like you and everything's alright now.  Talk with me when you're ready, we're going to help you

Amelia turns to Mr. Sallwort, the wave changing to a point at that main window above.

Is that where Mrs. Sallwort's locked herself in?  Hey, you two haven't had any trouble away from home, have you?  Do you know why she wanted to stay here alone instead of leave with you?

Amelia hesitates a moment, her gaze going soft and unfocused, her smile turning tender and regretful, then she rushes to add before Mr. Sallwort can answer, I think if I was scared and weird things were happening at home, and my husband was leaving... I think I'd not have stayed home no matter what.  Did you think it strange that she wanted to stay behind at the time, Mr Sallwort?

Amelia waits for James's answer, only her gaze following Cromwell as he leads the way towards the house.

(The wife is outside with you.)

"Oh, oh my, this is bad!"
The priest did not posess any supernatural senses, but the anxiety and fear on the family's faces were obvious to anyone.
"These things tend to happen when somebody dies" - he says to mr. Sallwort - "tell me, friend, has anyone died recently here? Or maybe even nearby? Sometimes, dead people do not wish to move on, and we get these ghosts lingering near the places of their death - and we don't want that, do we?"

[Imp]

Amelia glances a Mrs. Sallwort for a moment, then lifts her face back to that main window again.  She smiles, her eyes wide, and she hopes to see.  She'll only tarry a moment longer though, then she'll grab the bags she's supposed to carry and start bringing the group's equipment into the house.  [I'm assuming this is normal procedure for us... if not I'm doing my 'job', whatever that task is.  You implied that believers were something of a workhorse/jack of all trades in the group, and my cooperative character would be quite willing to 'do' useful stuff in order to be around magic].

Digging around, an old man in a fedora smoking a pipe, pulls out a video camera and checks his holster.

"Heh. Don't you worry, boy. No pitiful ghosts can stand in the way of cold hard tactics."

He powers up the camera and sweeps the outside of the house. If those ghosts were waiting around for them, he wasn't going to let them just sit and spy on the team.

(Well your gonna freak out the family. All he wanted was for you guys to tell his wife that there was no ghost...)
