Burlust are most easily exploitable as the enemy... they hate your guts?  Kill their leader.  You need tech?  Steal it from them, then kill their leader.  Need more influence for them to stop a war?  Kill their leader.

Would someone mind giving me some tips as it turns out I must pretty terrible at this game. Everyone I try to make friends with ends up hating each other, I fall behind in techs, I hire informants but they do nothing, and the races I do manage to get into good relationships with each other have no federation options.

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

What's happening? I don't really see where the RNG can screw you over that much. I'm struggling to think of anything that's random!

Maybe not the RNG, but the game seem to do the opposite of what I want.
I try to keep good relations between two factions, but then they suddenly go to war with each other.
Then someone get's the upper hand, by taking over the system and they just happen to be of the anti-federation kind.

Well, I got a bit farther, and pretty easily formed a federation with the Evucks and Skylaxians, later expanding it to the Peltians, Burlusts, and Andors. Of those remaining, the Boarines have no option to be recruited (despite the fact that they love me for uplifting them and giving them free tech), the Thoraxians don't seem to have an option either, though I haven't looked hard for them, and the Acutians hate me because I've been using them as a free credit and technology farm for a while now. I haven't really had any major roadblocks in this so far, either.

A patch went out not long after you posted this, including:

The everpresent complaint about the missing Boarine federation deals is now addressed; thanks for your patience on that one!

As an aside, while this game isn't as cool as I hoped, I think Arcen is an indie game company that is relatively stable while still trying interesting, ambitious things, while still pricing their games at a budget level. (I was going to compare to the price of a movie ticket, but maybe the Big Mac index is the better way to go... less than four Big Macs.) So, in much the same way that I kickstart projects I want to succeed, I'm happy to provide money to Arcen even when their execution isn't perfect, because that's the best way I know to encourage companies to produce the sort of stuff I want, rather than Call of Duty 27 or whatever. :-)

It's awesome that they patch their games often and with player suggestions, but why do they release them incomplete in the first place? When it first came out it was a mess. Anyone who played a full game of it could see that. Multiple patches later it has become "does not suck", but still has obvious exploits and just feels imbalanced. Is it so hard to do a beta test? How many people abandoned the game because of these oversights?

Everyone I try to make friends with ends up hating each other, I fall behind in techs, I hire informants but they do nothing, and the races I do manage to get into good relationships with each other have no federation options.

Here are a few things I've found;

- making races like each other; spam 'Colonise Moon' at them then 'Broker Trade Route' - obviously this may not always work (they need resources to trade) but gives a ticking + relation if you can make it happen.

- Falling behind in techs - don't. :) I think they recently patched theft to make everyone hate you, so you now need to consider researching; prioritising the Science Boost techs and controlling Science Outposts will speed the process, or you can just throw Scientists at it.

- Informants open up some of the 'Hostile Act' options, but whether these are useful or not depends on the situation

- All of the races have Federation options, except Boarine due to a bug (which is apparently fixed?), but in many cases they will be in different places in the 'political leaders' option for that race. Also to start the Federation you need usually at least two races to like each other by a large amount... which can be a problem, especially if they start shooting each other while you're trying to make that happen.

edit: Here's an actual tip that may not be obvious; if a category shows as red (ie. not available), you can still click on it to see your options. Can be helpful in long term planning (I need this, this iand this to do that)

I wonder if scientists and research outposts is really worth it. Unless you are going for all 8 races, its pretty easy to get 4-6 all into a federation. And since scientists and outposts are long term, if you are going for all 8 races one is bound to crash and burn before science investments pay off very much.

I do the moon/traderoute method, and I also research anything under a year and trade tech to as many races as I can early on. Also I tend to give spaceflight to 2-4 races plus give 1-3 terraforming. The only reason I ever fail to get all 8 is if one dies and certain races don't have a stop attacking command easily available.

After watching a few vids of this, I'm wondering if weapon arcs (BFG style) are possible to be modded in? It would make combat feel far more strategic, and could add a far bigger diversity of tactics and playstyles to each race. I know it's not really about the combat, but it sure would make for a fun mod.

Well, played for a bit.  Overall, it is ok, but if you want to get things done and don't mind enemies... battles get quite numerous.
One game, I went for total control of all science and manufacturing outposts.  Ends up giving me some bitter enemies who constantly attack my outposts, which means I have to fight em all the time.

Also, there is no sense of self preservation, when 2 races are attacking each other.  It is always a war of total destruction, unless I intervene, which is costly and/or time consuming.
Anyways, the race with smaller number of fleets, despite +100 enemy fleets on their homeworld, keeps sending their new fleets at the enemy homeworld to die.  Where-in I am actually trying to help by boosting their fleet production, they would have eventually repelled the attacking fleet if they did not do that...

Yeah, in my game the federation has a billion fleets around one of the enemies' home worlds, but only 1.3b military there compared to 23b, and it doesn not seem like it's changing at all. In the meantime, all their planets are empty of their ships, and their outposts constantly under attack :\

Yes, that too, send all in, never defend.  Outposts get ninja'd.  Their homeworld could easily be ninja'd by a new contender.

Agreed, I'd like to see a little more variation - dare I say subtlety? - in the AI's overall combat strategy.  I mean, it's not like the team don't have experience with that sort of thing - this is Arcen, for crying out loud!  :P

I don't know why people ask how to make 2 races like each other. I had completly oposite problem.
By the time the second group of techs got unlocked i had all races in a federation but Acutians (starting race, so thousands of negative influence) and Boarines (because "how the hell do i get them in"). However only Thoraxines were in constant war with Acutians (by me intervening and saving Thoraxines a few times) and I somehow easily managed to get Burlust to invade Boarines.
By that time everyone had super high RGI (I thought there was a limit of 100 mentioned in one of tutorials) of 200+ and everyone loved each other out of admiration. I spent decades hurting relations to get a second race join a war (you can't pay them to join a war unless they have negative relations), but when i tried third admiration points were building up faster than i could hurt them.
Left the game. Why the hell would i play it if i can just make federation with every surviving race 20 years in game by not doing a thing. Will try again in a few months time, but I associate Arcen with fixing by removing features (anyone remember top-down city managment in Valley Without Wind?). Their only game i liked was Skyward Collapse.

If everyone loves everyone else, use the Andors or Skylaxians to invite the Acutians into the federation, since your influence with the Acutians is irrelevant that way.
