I think it'd work a lot better if the campaign was a strategic layer on top of some really cool combat, where you got more progression than you do right now.

You don't really "level up" and your ship doesn't really get kitted out, so to me there is little sense of progression. Combat is somewhat satisfying - in particular, I really like manoeuvring to avoid larger shots. It reminds me of avoiding torpedos in WW2 naval actions, but other than that yeah... I keep my weapons maxed, engines minimum, some on shields, and if there are too many units coming my way I use some special abilities. That gets me through fights against 8, 9 enemies.

I do think the campaign is definitely more about the story. If you try min-maxing this, I'm sure 99% of the options are useless. If you enjoy understanding the different races and trying to do different things with them, it's a better experience.

Starting next week we're going to be releasing at least one new free feature every week for at least a few months, if not longer.  A quest, a new weapon or ability, a new ship, a new action... something.  We'll vary it up, and make it fun.  I'm really excited about expanding the game even further, as large as it already is.

So this might be the general problem with Arcen. More isn't necessarily better. I feel they could do with streamlining a few of their titles, maybe. A lot of their games have all these units with a billion health points and a bajillion shields... they tend to start feeling all kind of samey.

That said, their support is probably going to be extraordinary, and The Last Federation has been on the Steam Top 20 chart since release. They seem happy about it.

Quote from: Arcen Blog
Support for the game has been overwhelming so far -- as you can probably guess by the Steam top sellers charts -- and we're really grateful for that.

Every single game these guys make sounds just great. I have something for games with a deep and complicated metagame (and for very intricate and complicated things on a very small scale too, naturally.)

Tip for fellow Brits: The Last Federation's sale price on Steam is £11.99.  Its sale price on the Humble Store is £8.99.  (GOG is somewhere between the two).  If you purchase through the Humble Store, you get a Steam key (as well as access to a non-Steam download if you prefer).  Seems to be a no-brainer.  Afraid I have no idea if this same discrepancy applies to users of other currencies!  :P

I've always liked Arcen's design philosophy, even if I haven't always liked the end result (AVWW and AVWW2, for example...although even there, the fact that they gave purchasers of #1 a copy of #2 for free really recovered their reputation in my eyes).  This appears no different - I really, really love the concept of the game.  And it looks like it's going to offer me at least £8.99 worth of entertainment, even if it's not everything I hope it will end up being (although I have a fair amount of faith in Arcen's post-release development, which helps on that score as well).

Besides, I want to be a shadowy figure wiping out civilisations with barely a word.  Is that so wrong?

the last federation seems to have quite some similarities with drox-operative. ( http://store.steampowered.com/app/274480 )

in both titles you have one ship and concentrate on influencing/helping/hindering races that you dont directly control.

drox has more focus on "diablo like combat" with loot and levelups and champion/boss ships etc.
and last federation is ...hmm... more focused to turnbased tactical combat and influencing the unique races compared to drox ?

Yeah, there's not really that much levelling and loot as in Drox Operative. There are some missions you can accomplish that give you a larger set of special abilities to chose from, and there are some different weapons, but it's definitely not about fighting for loot or anything.

Yup, it does (11 euro Vs. 15). And unless you're dealing in $$ you can almost bet that there will be (steam pretends like they don't know what currency conversion is)

Well...ground combat is now fixed...but if there is one thing I'd have to say about all of the Acren games, they have good music.

The loot is pointless. As long as you have a cloak and maybe afterburner you don't need anything else for most missions. You can't even use specials in the most important fight, dueling warlords, anyways.

This game is working against me.
It's RNG hates my guts for some inane reason I don't know.

What's happening? I don't really see where the RNG can screw you over that much. I'm struggling to think of anything that's random!

So I was thinking of getting this or drox-operative with the expansion. What is the better game, or what is better/different in one compared to other?

If you read through the thread you should get a feel for the differences. The short of it is that Drox is much more of a loot grindfest , whereas this one has very little feeling of ship progression, and is more about a large and complex meta-game with many quirks and details (all factions work completely differently, etc).

Well, my first game is going interestingly so far.

Those peace-loving barn owl people? Quite dangerous when angry. One recent notification in my game told me that they were dropping explosive personnel pods onto the resident warmongers, the Burlust. Now I know why the Peltians are peace-loving; when they get angry, they blow up.

Meanwhile the Burlust are declaring war on everything whilst having approximately no ships, on account of everyone else they've declared war on being in orbit around their planet, blasting any newly-minted ships to smithereens immediately.

And apparently nobody else wants to join my Federation, because they all like money but don't like to give any of it up. Except the Boarines, who like money but don't have an option to join the Federation (due to a bug, apparently). And the Evucks, who are isolationists and don't want to be friends with the feathered death-blob that I've started. Or the Acutians, who hate me for stealing a ship... and all their technology... and blowing up their anti-Federation forces... but who aren't even a power anymore because all their stuff has been blown up, too.

Guess I'll just have to grind up enough credit to drag the Skylaxians in, then get the Boarine in via their option (if it exists), then use other means to force the Evucks, Acutians, and - if they haven't been exploded by giant peace-campaigning barn owls - the Burlust to join.

Overall - the game is interesting but could use a bit more inter-faction stuff besides the war declarations. (I assume that this would be covered by the 'other alliances' possibility which means that we'd end up having to break them up; whether this is good or bad would remain to be seen)

After trying the game, I bought, not for what it is now, but what it might become in the future.

I hope they reinforce the interactions between the factions and make internal politics more meaningful. As it is, after the start, the game becomes pretty much grinding. It would be nice if there was a way to customize your Federation with various Federal politics. Likewise, the ending should be different depending on who you have in the Federation and what type of alliance it is.

I won the game with a Federation of Andors, those-silly-owls and unpronouncable-gray-aliens. The others got eliminated. It was kind of a shame, I tried recruiting the loners for a long while, but they just went crazy at Andors for some reason and things escalated quickly.

I agree that upgrading your ship is kind of bland, hope you get more stuff there in the future. Likewise, you really should be able to buy tech from allies, instead of only being able to steal it.
