What will we have in the way of raw material and parts when we land. Will I have the stuff to set up a proper workshop and lab?

Also how will one of us training an npc go?

Xenobiology kinda covers everything alien in most games for simplicity.
I do decree that there were never any alien encounters before the ones you are going to have. I'm all right with using the wikipedia definition of xenobiology, though.

You will have the basic tools of your trade once you open the Horizon's storage section, and the ability to make more tools once the manufacturing unit is set up. As for raw materials (metal), your capsules and the hull of the storage section can be recycled after you build some homes - you can use wood for that, and there are specialized wood-cutting and building tools in store. People who can use them on the crew, too.
Oh, and you'll have to prospect for a mine in the future - fortunately, Borean soil is rich in iron, and spectral imaging has revealed several likely spots not far from the camp.
As for training NPCs, I suppose it's possible, but why? You are not the only technical specialist on the crew, so you can always ask another engineer or cyberneticist for assistance.

I'll put your charsheets in the first post under the spoiler, and then I can roll for your landings and you can start. That is, after Urist McDwarf gets back to me with all this stuff.

Was considering training some apprentices but no need if we have some. It'll mostly be engineers I need to help me build a few construction drones then they can help me build a mining force and the facilities to refine the ore.

With luck I can become the head of science and construction. With low numbers we need to be well organized.

Do robots exist already or will I have to design it from scratch.

Yes, robots exist for most programmable tasks, mining included. Ways to design them with various resource restrictions and in varying conditions are studied in cybernetics universities all around the world, so your character probably knows how to operate the factory unit. I'll write more when you get there.

That works. I can build us a construction force and go from there.

Probably look to upgrade them to be better once the initial force is sorted and doing it's job. Stock models are good, stock models with hidden guns are better.

LANDING

McGaw [5]:
As you fall, the pumps begin their work. Stasis fluid, now spent and useless, is pumped out of your veins, while your blood is pumped back in. The temperature raises, but not into the comfort zone, so when the capsule thunks into the snow, you are shivering with the cold, trying to fight off an incredibly uncomfortable sense of stretched time.
You collect your thoughts, and get up from the vat. Near the door of your capsule is a large gray box - that's where your clothes would be, they said in training.
You open the box and inspect the contents. A warm, heavy gray-and-white hooded parka with matching pants. A set of thermo underwear. Gloves, warm but thin. A flat backpack with a dry ration inside. A small tablet computer. A pair of flat headphones. Virtuality glasses, like a pair of skiing goggles, but smaller. And in a separate box, a bulky pistol with a molded plastic grip and two magazines of ammo. You put all this on, holster the pistol, and peek out the door.
Fortunately, you landed quite close to the storage section - you can see other people getting out of their capsules. The cylinder is a few hundred meters away, standing there in a cloud of steam.
O'Driscoll[1]
When your capsule lands, you are already fully conscious, so when, instead of the jarring impact that you were told would come, your  capsule makes a cracking, hissing noise, and then starts to rock slowly, you are quite disturbed.
You get up, get dressed, check your pistol, and open the door.
Whoops. It looks like you landed into the river. It is normally frozen, but your capsule's impact made quite a large hole in the ice. The culprit bobs on the surface, wisps of seam rising from it. You could surely swim to the shore, but that would leave you with wet, freezing clothes. On the other hand, you could message the rest of the colonists and wait to be rescued.
Hazec[1]
You come to your senses slowly, and when you do, the capsule is already still. You get up, get dressed, take a few seconds to compose yourself - this could be the most significant moment in your life, after all - and push open the door.
The view is breathtaking. You have landed in a forest of conifer trees not unlike Earth firs, but taller - you remember that Borean gravity is only 9.46 m/s2 - maybe that's why..? The trees rise like the pillars in a Gothic temple, with rays of sunlight falling between them, setting the snow to brilliance. The patch of sky above you is radiantly blue.
You look down, and your joy fades a bit. Your temporary home is hanging from a tree by its parachute. It is quite high - maybe ten or fifteen meters - and the tree is covered in a slippery sheen of ice, which is very pretty, but not very climbable. You could try to jigger the capsule into releasing the parachute, you suppose. Or message the others..?
Beauchene[4]
You land on the top of a snowy hill. Pulling on your clothing, you climb out into the snow.
The wind tugs at you like a playful puppy, and the sun makes the landscape shine dazzlingly. From here, you can see for a long way in every direction. To the north of you, there is a forest of magnificently tall trees. The shining strip of the river loops through it for a while, the slithers out into the open plain. Your ship is parked to the southwest. It's a kilometer's walk through deep snow - nothing for a seasoned outdoorsman, and downhill besides. A long way past that, you can see low, craggy mountains in the distance.
Everywhere you look, there are grey points: capsules. People are starting to converge on the Horizon's landing site. Perhaps you should go too..?
Oh, look, some poor sucker's landed in the river.
Calion[3]
Your capsule lands in the forest, near the rivershore, where the trees are at their lowest. You climb out, and, after all the view-admiring is done, pull out your tablet to consult the map. You are a kilometer and a half from camp, but you could probably walk the frozen river until you get closer: the snow on it is shallower.
You'll have to walk through the forest, though. You unbutton your pistol holster nervously.
Shater[1]
You are still dozing when your capsule makes planetfall, so when everything suddenly rotates 180 degrees and back and again and back, it comes as a rather unpleasant surprise. The clothing-box opens, and its contents tumble out. You bite your tongue and swear.
Eventually it all comes to a stop. You pick up your stuff, get dressed, and get out unsteadily.
From the looks of it, your capsule landed on the side of a tall hill, and then rolled down. The capsules are diamond-shaped, and fall flat side down. It is the optimal shape for a re-entry craft, and has the added advantage of stopping such tumbles. Well, usually. Your capsule landed on its side, and then rolled down the hill in a curving path.
You cannot see any other capsules, so you take out your tablet and check the map. Well, try to, at least. Damn, those things were supposed to be shock-proof! Well, no way you'll be getting your money back now, you suppose...

((Assuming I have some form of communication device like a phone.))

Requesting assistance, capsule has landed in semi-frozen river.

Check contents of pod, especially weapons and ammo.

((Ah. Maybe I failed to make that clear, but the contents of your boxes are all the same - pants, parka, underwear, gloves, glasses, headphones, backpack, tablet, and pistol.))

((Yep. You have no data about the local wildlife at all, and it would be a shame if your head research scientist got eaten by critters on his way back to camp for lack of a weapon, right? Besides, everyone was shown how to use a pistol in training before you departed. They may be less skilled than you, but they know which end to point at the bad guys.))

You're not supposed to dream in cryo...your body is technically, medically dead. Brain functions are minimal-only enough to keep your heart beating, and barely that.

But, Kathryn McGaw felt she had dreamed a lifetime away, under the ice. Momentary flashes of a different life-not *her* life, the one who came before...she had a different name...everything about her was odd...like being a stranger to her own body...there had been work, hard work. Her former had seemed to do nothing but work. This suited McGaw fine-she liked to work. She had literally been created to do so. But there were other things, that she couldn't understand. Why was the dog dead, and why did it make her so sad? /The Dogs name was Rowdy/ Why did she enjoy flying aircraft? /white knuckles gripping the armbar, a shaky smile, father says it'll be alright/ Why did the handsome man in the blue coat keep appearing in her mind, a joyful, living warmth with no definition? /To have and to hold/ What was that buzzing fly, so close to her, and why did it make her so afraid? /...when I died.../

Was it all lingering of genetic memory? Those had not even be scientifically proven, after all. Maybe it was just her imagination, culling things from media sources...on the other hand, for a clone, an expanding imagination tended to proceed increasing psychosis-a sure indicator of the approaching hardline termination date, usually around 40. When it came down to it, you could only recycle the same material so many times. You could dilute the subjects genetic sample, of course, granting more time-but, that would get you a less perfect result...

Of course, she was well aware that hardly 10 years earlier they had already made another McGaw, though with a different name-her replacement. She knew she would have to wait for a communication system to be established, but she had a natural human curiosity, wondering how her ensuing generations had fared-genetic technology had no doubt improved during the time. She could hold the slimmest hope they might be able have found a way to replenish her genetic structure, but it was not a concern. What would happen, would happen. She had already lived far beyond her Hardline, technically.

She shook away her troublesome thoughts-she was not usually this prone to strangeness. This Fear. Maybe Madness. Hardline termination.

Kathryn zipped up her 'custom' Parka-it had the Bioglo company logo on it, three green hexagons in a tower-and stepped out into the cold.

....

Mental calculations. Only 50% to 60% of the pods landed on course. Below expectations. Rescue efforts had to be undertaken, immediately-manpower was their most vital resource. It would take almost 20 years for the first children to reach maturity...assuming less than half the existing population would be socially compatible...compulsory breeding programs as a last resort...she hoped...

They needed to preserve as many lives as possible.

Deciding on that course of action, she decided to employ the use of one of the small, solar powered vehicles located in the cargo bay-a hovermobile that could travel over calm water and snow with ease. She was trained in their use, of course. As with her gun, which offered her comfort as it lay on her hip. She was not a soldier, but it was still useful for personal defense...which she had no doubt, there would be need of. She had calculated long ago that at least 2% of the expedition would be composed of deviant individuals-whom the normal scales of morality did not entirely apply. But, there were worse things to worry about, for now.

She could only hope the vehicles had survived the landing and the trip intact.

And, almost as an afterthought, she reflected the sky and snow were quite beautiful-not like Earth, she thought. It reminded her of a certain warm taste /eggnog/ but, she didn't know what *that* was exactly, or why it was somehow related.

Action: Collect my gear and assist others in getting to the landing zone who landed off target...I'm hoping we have some sort of small, personal vehicles around here in the cargo bay...if I can get one, jet in and rescue people I can find. Otherwise, don't stray too far from camp unless I'm joining a rescue party-and try to organize one if needed.

Harvey shrugs and starts rocking his pod to dislodge it from the trees as he clicks his headset on.

" Uhhhh, guys? My pod decided it wanted to land in a damned tree. A little help please? "
