((Aurel the Vryloka Vampire had an ability called Larger than Life that made his hands into a blue-red flame and increased his melee range with 1. I never got to use it in the end. Aurel has been known by many names over the course of his life, and one of them is The Crimson Deceiver. This is indeed why a cult called The Crimson Deceiver was created, but eventually extinguished. He has spent a great deal of his wandering through the world after his banishment. I will refrain from further details on him due to reasons discussed not here.

Also, he was Lawful Evil. Bet you didn't expect that.))

((I was expecting Lawful Evil or Neutral Evil indeed. I have to say that I think you played him that way pretty well - he had a good balance of looking out for himself and casual manipulation of others along with not being a party-alienating backstabber.

I'm looking forward to how your new character turns out.))

((Aurel's main goal was to take advantage of everybody whilst keeping information from everybody as much as possible. Think of Aurel as a practical evil guy. He'll make use of you guys [which is why I constantly tried to alleviate tension among the party] and gain the most. I think it worked out pretty well, considering that if we were roleplaying this, I don't think anybody would think of him as a very evil person.

As for my new character, well, you'll just have to see.))

((Didn't he also steal an amulet from the Elven caravan?))

Karl leaves Aurel's room with a sigh of weariness. As he passes by Nadarr's room, the deep snores from within makes the paladin's lips tighten in irritation.

Trying the door, Karl lets himself inside, closing the door behind him. From the doorway, his voice heavy with fatigue, "Nadarr, wake up. i have grave news..."

Once Nadarr is coherent, relate what has happened and prevent Nadarr from running off immediately in search of vengeance. Once Nadarr has calmed down, ask him if he knows about any final wishes Aurel may have.
You awake Nadarr and tell him the news. After you tell him of Aurel's death, you see him start to twitch but not change. He's obviously holding it back. ((DwArfY can take over now))

Nadarr's face twitches, the wolf struggling to come out, but he doesn't let it.

He's already done enough damage to Karl, and though the urge to simply run out of the room and seek vengeance is strong, he has a feeling he'd have to go through Karl first. The twitching intensifies, then dies down. Still, barely repressed fury burns in his eyes, and he leaps up, walking quickly up and down in front of Karl, trying to cool down. As he paces, he barks, quickly, sharply and angrily at Karl.

He's dead? Damn, damn, damn. Your Raven Queen seems not to be loyal to her subjects, does she? This with a humourless chuckle and a baleful glare at Karl.

Yes. He had final wishes. We had a pact. You're here. You must have known we knew each other.
It included a will. But I'm not going to tell it all.
Another brief, sharp chuckle.I doubt he'd want me to. But on his death his flesh was not to be allowed to touch the sunlight, his estate in Crimmor was to be given to Petra, his helper and friend. And all his possessions to me, to help in our mutual mission. His family was not to know of his death, as they disagreed on some points. But what does it matter, eh? He's dead.

When I find that gut stabbing swine, that shaded bastard...I'll...I'll

Nadarr's pacing intensifies.

((Yes, he had a will. Are you surprised? It was part of the backstory, and I don't think there's any documented proof, so feel free to refute parts of it.))

((The fact he was hunted also makes sure he does have some backup plan in case he dies.

I really don't want to keep this going on for as long as we need to, so as soon as Nadarr and Karl and done, I'm assuming everyone goes to bed because you have a choice to make:

Go to the fortress or take out some of the bandits?))

"The Raven Queen is perfectly loyal to her subjects, but one of her core tenants is that we all die in our appointed time. No one, not even the Gods themselves can escape death entirely. For what it is worth... I am sorry he died in this way."

Karl nods as Nadarr explains Aurel's will. "From what he explained to us, you two have known each other for quite a while. I would... prefer the will on paper, if only to provide perfect proof of Aurel's final requests, but I will honor them. As for Aurel's possessions... I would suggest that what you do not use, should be offered to the other members of the group. I fear that the fortress ahead will prove daunting enough, and any advantage will help. But that is your choice.

There is one other matter I would speak of. Aurel spoke to myself and Weston of your... condition... and that he would aid you in leaving the city or securing a confinement for your involuntary change. I offer the same assistance, should you need it. You need but ask. As for the assassin who stabbed Symon and murdered Aurel... well, if we come across him, we can certainly give him a face to face meeting with my Goddess, but until the business with the fortress is done, I think it best we don't split our attention in too many directions."

Karl takes his leave and stops in Aurel's room, gazing down at the deceased' pale, composed features.

"Don't let your flesh touch light in death? Dear Raven Queen, I was a willing fool to not see you for the vampire you were."

Karl turns to leave, but stops at the door. "Whatever you were in your life or unlife, I will pray for your soul in the afterlife for many weeks."

Karl goes to his room and attempts to sleep for the rest of the night. At dawn, he will go and make arrangements for a plain casket to be brought to the inn, bring it up and place Aurel within. if the others will help, take Aurel to the graveyard and bury him with a simple marker with Aurel's name and a prayer to the Raven Queen on it.

((After that, we can agree on the fortress or the bandits. Since highmax has indicated we have time, I'd actually go with killing some of the nearby bandits to build up our experience and funds.))

Nadarr paces up and down, up and down. Eventually, he collapses in his bed, vaguely remembering that before Karl had woken him, it had been Aurel.

From his reptilian face, a single tear falls and spills into the pillow, but what matter? He slips into sleep, where his hate, anger and pain can't reach him, vowing vengeance on the murderer who took away his greatest companion and best friend.

The party heads to sleep and when they awake and head downstairs, only Weston is unfamiliar with the absence of one of the party members. Karl arranges for a basic funeral for him with a casket and rites given by himself, coating 25gp for a basic wooden box that the locals call "a casket". ((I assume this)) They use Aurel's funds to pay for it and bury him in the local graveyard. A few bar patrons come in respect for the pale one. His skin never met sunlight as his cloak now covered him entirely as his body is buried. Silence befalls the party as Aurel is put in the ground. The basic grave marker is a simple wooden marking with the symbol of the Raven Queen marked on it. It is roughly 2pm and the party has two options:

Do they hunt the bandits or do they head to the fortress?

((It is currently day 13/40. It is almost a run (ten days) into the first month of fall))

Bandits. I...want to hurt something.

Weston, depressed at the death of yet another comrade and angry that no-one bothered to tell him about it, shrugged.

"I doubt that this haunted fortress of yours is going to get any more haunted than it is already, whereas the bandits will continue to pillage until they are stopped. I say bandits."

Nadarr goes solemnly through Aurel's stuff, taking two potions of healing, his haunted cloth armour and all his coin.

He carries the rest to the others and sets it down before them
.

Take what you want, he says, trying to keep emotion from his face.

((Sorry about the coin, it doesn't seem fair. But I didn't think, dead companion or not, he'd leave it. He's a natural hoarder, and I was able to leave all the potions of healing by putting it down to strenuous circumstances...but not coin.))
