Thats certainly an exploit i forgot about, digging out sand layers.

This is something I do, usually, except I leave all tiles which are damp from ponds and rivers and such.  I wouldn't have a problem putting up supports to prevent cave-ins if this were put back in.  I use this layer for my farms as well as livestock / egg layers and my butcher shop and tanning workshop.  Terribly convenient, especially when embarked in evil regions.  Also great training for newbie miners.

Also I like quantum stockpiles for bars and rock.  Take a little wrangling to get wheelbarrows working for a large number of dwarves tho.

Stuff I won't do: danger rooms, atom smashing (I would use one for item disposal but I really enjoy the idea of a magma chute, it's not too hard).  Walling in the map seems silly.

Most of these things I don't do simply because I have zero confidence in my engineering skills or simply never have a need for them.

Clutter gets shipped out with caravans or stuffed in cabinets (bad for FPS I know.)
Bridges are only used to deny access across ledges I've removed the ramps from or across moving bodies of water, though sometimes they may be put to use in lockouts due them being there and the militia not in place. Only ever used bridges in battle for a glacial fort due to the enemy having just way too many men for my troops, dogs, coyotes, lynxes, and wolves to face.
Constructions though tend to be sitting on soil layers, but often they end up with foundations added later for aesthetic reasons.

Danger rooms I shy away from, if only because I get more enjoyment from the old fashioned way, unless it's an emergency.

Emergencies can be solved by throwing bodies at the problem, lots of bodies.... crossbows usually are more effective than melee weapons in such situations.

I use pretty tightly controlled/small populations usually and rely on elite soldiers to handle most threats. I'm too lazy to make bolts unless I feel I have the time and resources to do so, but I will usually have a small team of marksdwarves for dealing with things like monsters made of fire or packing deadly blood/gases/webs.

I have yet to meet an organized enemy who can best between 3 and 6 legendary swordsdwarves otherwise. So satisfying watching them tear a bloodsoaked swath through massive enemy squads...
