Does anybody know how I can uncensor Firefox's spellchecker?
« on: November 30, 2013, 02:46:59 am »

It's not the biggest of deals, but it's sort of annoying to me that Firefox is willing to tell me that "motherfukcer" is spelled wrong without actually suggesting "motherfucker" as the solution, which it does not recognize as spelled wrong. You aren't fooling anybody, Firefox.

I'm guessing it's an option in one of the many files, but which one?

A second issue is that the words I add to my dictionary are given the exact same treatment. "Transhumanism" isn't marked wrong any more, but it still won't show up as a solution for "Transhumranism". All the words I've added are in the file they are supposed to show up in.

Hmm. I know you can get Firefox to actually censor any word you come across replacing it with another, which makes the news a whole lot more fun to read, but... I don't actually know the logic they use to correct words or suggest corrections. Sorry. Now I want to know too.

I'm truly shocked that, as far as the Google Overlords can tell me, this has never been asked before.

I would say you can find most of answers in - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Spell_checking. Mainly the part about custom dictionary, because normal EN dictionary doesn't have the substitutions you want.

Also this bug may be the problem here - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=338291.

There's this open source Chrome extension, all you have to do to add words to it is download it's source from the github (direct download link(Although with this fork you'll have to do less entry since it has regex for case matching.)). Extract the substitutions folder from that to somewhere on your computer, then open the substitutions.js file from the js folder in any text editor and add entries to the replacements list with the word to be replaced first followed by the word to replace it with. (If you're using the first one you'll need each form of capitalization you want it to check and replace.) Once you're satisfied with your list go to chrome://extensions and drag and drop the folder in, and it will load as an extension. If you want to change the list later you can just go back to substitutions.js and add more things, then go back to chrome://extensions and click the reload button under the extension.

It works for me (Firefox 26.0 Win7). Maybe there's another program responsible for blocking it on your PC? It could be a bug too.
