Nah, the green stuff is just named, not artifact. Those two iron war hammers are both forbidden, but their owners won't drop them to pick up the masterwork silver hammers I have waiting for them.

What have you got the uniforms set to? If it's 'war hammers' and not 'silver war hammers', well they're already carrying one of those, and it fits so well in their hand...

If, after the dwarf has started construction, you forbid the base material for an artifact (or base materials, if the dwarf has more than one log, bar, stone, etc. of the first item on the mood list), the game spits out an artifact of the first material it can find. In an unmodded game, this is iron, because iron is the first material in the first inorganic file.

Don't forid all the materials, or the mood will time out and fail.

If you have a Captain of the Guard, give it to him/her, and don't have jails.  Beating related injuries and deaths will be a thing of the past! 

I have magma and candy, which dfHack shows to be a minimum of 100 z-levels down before I even get close to hitting it.  Enjoy the candy for me

Uniforms are set to silver hammers, exact matches.

Adamantine war hammers are at least useful for the Hammerer, and have high value.

The worst artifacts are usually along the lines of Larch Puzzle Box with no decorations.
