Odd wealth accounting discrepancy (obscure?)
« on: November 30, 2013, 01:21:28 am »

Here's something I didn't expect:

Let's say I construct a carpentry shop using an imported log (base value 3).  My Imported Wealth stays the same, presumably because the log isn't destroyed.  My created wealth goes up by 3 in the category "architecture".

Now let's say I also have a log I produced by cutting a tree.  It is in the stockpile and adds 3 to my created wealth in the "Other Objects" category.  If I build a carpentry shop with this log, my created wealth goes up by 6; 3 in architecture and 3 in "displayed".

So basically, when building a workshop, I get the materials value credited in "displayed" if I use local materials, but I do not get that credit if I use imported materials.  That seems odd to me, because....

If I build a chair using an imported log, I lose 3 from my imported wealth (presumably because the log is destroyed and cannot be recovered).  My created wealth goes up by 10, in the furniture category.   However if I place it in my dining hall, I get another 20; 10 in architecture and 10 in displayed.  This happens regardless of whether the log was imported or not.

Seems like a discrepancy.  Maybe I don't understand the "displayed" category?

It doesn't matter whether the chair started out as a log or a (log), because imported (or siezed...) items become 'yours' when processed. Turning them into a different item counts, as does decorating them.

If you build a bag or chest bought from the caravan, you should get the same result as when you built the workshop with the imported log.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

One of us is not understanding the other.  Let me simplify my post.

If I build a workshop with a (log), my created wealth goes up by 3.

If I build a workshop with a log, my created wealth goes up by 6.  The extra 3 points is in the sub-category "displayed".

I was talking about the example of the chair, not the example of the carpenter's shop.

Yeah, it's me not being clear.  The point of the chair is to show that it is valued the same whether the materials are imported or not (which we expect) but the workshop is not.

I'd expect that too, based on the OP. The value of the log is not the fortress's to display, so it doesn't count. Once you order a 'make a chair' job, the chair is created from nothing and the log vanishes into nothing.

What I'm wondering now is if imported vs. fortress-made affects the perception of a building. Three of the four components of a well can be imported, and given the random decorations you may find something that's more valuable than what you've made yourself and left undecorated.

Building a workshop from a locally produced item gives you the value of the item itself plus the added valuie of it being part of a workshop.
Building a workshop from an imported item does not give you the value of the item itself (because it was imported) but it still gives the value of it being part of a workshop.

I don't see anything unusual about that logic.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
