Overly specific game modding questions! Stalker edition!
« on: November 30, 2013, 12:56:13 am »

So in the cataclysm topic the Misery mod for stalker CoP came up, and I have not really got around to playing much CoP after finishing it some years ago on a painfully underpowered computer. But back then I used to play it vanilla, and then with the very early version of SMRTER. Most recently I tried playing it through with complete since I do genuinely like complete for SoC and CS, though they do sometimes feel like they streamline the game a little too much.

So my question is, across the three games what are some of the better bigger mods available? I've heard bits and pieces here and there but I just don't know what would ultimately appeal to me the most since the complete mods are very vanilla feeling.

I'm most curious about Clear sky and Call of Prypyat. Since I really liked clear sky and CoP is one I feel I haven't given enough love to.

One caveat for CoP: Complete, it doesn't happen for everyone, but Complete broke the final mission for me, so I wasn't able to complete the game (irony, right?).

I also looked into Stalkersoup mod, but was too depressed at not being able to win that I kinda set it down and haven't been back yet.

Stalkersoup? That's the cleaned up AMK for the SoC right? Or is that something entirely different?

Ah you're right, it is SoC instead of CoP. I'm just going to stop posting late and making myself look silly.

So anyone here have some familiarity with the Misery mod for CoP? I really enjoyed what I got to play, but it's so temperamental for me and it totally breaks whenever I try to switch classes.

Trying to get it going without anything extra works, but I get save corruption issues. Installing the fix for those works and helps but then I get odd CTDs in areas here and there. Putting in the unofficial patch also just prevents the game from loading at all.

Misery was very temperamental for me. I had to just wipe everything and do a fresh install, then another hour and a half of fiddling got it to load, then i had to restart three or four times to actually play for about 10 minutes before it crashed. I recall the autokill script when you're in sight range of an anomaly crashed me a few times as well. I think it does some weird fooling with game files to make each class work, so I guess your safest bet would be to run it form a clean install once you've decided the class you want to play and hope for the best.

That's what I'm currently trying to do. And yeah it's a little frustrating because of how the class switch works. I don't see why that feature is making the entire game refuse to launch after a switch though.

Well from what little I recall it modifies a ton of definitions about how player mechanics work. This is a complete shot in the dark on my part, but I'd guess STALKER is doing an error check on the modified values and then quitting without throwing an exception (because the vanilla game was never designed to deal with those kinds of errors). I do remember class selection isn't determined by savegame, it's in the core files, so it may be running into trouble trying to pre-cache your saves?

But that's all guessing.

Well I'm still in the process of reinstalling CoP before I plug misery in again. Though I think this time I'm gonna do the right thing and back up my install before I even touch it.

I also think I'm gonna restart steam and make sure I run it in admin mode. I know Misery wants CoP to have admin privileges and I don't know if steam being a middleman there is fucking that up.

Edit: Fresh install, added unofficial patch. Game wont start new, switching classes still crashes shit. Gonna just try without the damn patch now.

I remember play S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl with a mod called Oblivion Lost. I believe that mod aimed to add in a lot of the content that was left out or never finished by the developers like cars, a few zones, items, blowouts, anomalies changing positions and several mutant types (like a really lanky zombie and Buers).

The new content was fun to mess around in, but the levels are mostly too cramped for vehicles.

I actually managed to fix my crashes during gameplay. And I feel stupid for not catching it. I was using KCS' repair mod for Misery and it seems he refrenced a model that didn't exist. I just copied another repair kit model and now I don't get crashes during gameplay.

Still not sure if class swapping is gonna behave but I'm enjoying things as is enough. This mod is awesome on a level I kinda wish I could get in the other games too.
