Drink wouldn't go down, then the pain, then the PAIN!
« on: November 29, 2013, 05:47:07 pm »

I am just wondering what this is...

It happened before...

I drink a drink, the liquid goes down, then it gets stuck, and then it is PAINFULLY STUCK!!! like it is trying to go to the stomach by force...

and this is so painful it even can cause me to faint... It definately causes me to go light headed and my esophogus feels sensitive for the entire day.

I am just wondering what this is.

I've had this a few times and usually it's been because the drink was too cold while I was too hot, or the drink was too hot while I was too cold. If I try to keep temperatures balanced it never happens.

I sometimes have pain with the swallow of a meal, drink or food. Dunno if it's related, but either way I haven't figured out why it happens.

For me it only happens if I drink something close to when I wake up. Likely also linked with dehydration.

Does the amount matter? You could be shocking your drowsy system or something with just too much drink at once.

The amount causes more pain.

It I drink VERY little it still happens... but the pain is bareable.

Try some breathing exercise sorts of things beforehand, see if that helps. Make sure you're breathing steadily and deeply beforehand, at least.

Tentatively sounds like an esophageal spasm (like a cramp in the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach)

Here's a resource to check it out - for most people, stuff like this happens very rarely (but can happen to anyone, it's like getting any other cramp really), extremely rarely it happens pretty frequently, and for a small number of those people who get this a lot, something's actually seriously wrong.

So chances are you're just fine, if this is what it is.

Sometimes I have that feeling when I eat something EXTREMELY hot. As in, baked potatoes that have been out of the oven for less than a minute.

Hmmh, well, given that your esophagus is 1/3 skeletal, 2/3rds smooth muscle (you only feel what's up in the upper third), and...given what you say.

...

Did you check your throat? Dry throat or something? History of smoking...?

Edit: Get a check-up from the doctor who specializes there. Because the case of 'diagnosing the self based on search engine results//wikipedia' often leads to...the wrong diagnosis and useless panic.

What kind of liquid are you talking about? I note you didn't just say 'water'. You didn't say fluid..or perhaps I'm being too specific.

Yer body temperature is always the same no matter what the external temperature is. Hence why you've that kind of reaction (feeling the hotness/coldness go down your throat). If it feels fine when entering and being chewed in the mouth, then it'll feel fine going down. :P
