A masterwork felsite cabinet, menacing with spikes of pig tail cloth, being wielded by a berzerking thrice-legendary+5 mason, miner, and bookkeeper.

What about hammer vs. mace?

(Personally I like to fold the default mace-skill weapons into either flail or hammer skill, and reserve the mace skill for knives and rename it appropriately. Shivdwarves need a profession to call their own.)

in typical movies and such I beleve that hammers and axes are the most common weapon for a dwarf

But... knife skill is already in the game ???.

Hammer apparently, because dwarves use it in their justice system.

It is, but it's not counted as a military skill. As with picks, a dwarf who takes up the weapon will remain a Recruit until they get enough unarmed skill to become a Wrestler, even if they become Legendary+ in the dagger or pick. Since maces and hammers are pretty similar, I combine the two and give the knife users* their own space in the Status screen. Like so:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

*They're still mace users as far as the game is concerned because they're using a weapon that runs on the MACE skill, but you can rename military and other professions. The game already does this, to give you speardwarves and craftsdwarves instead of the default spearmen and craftsmen. It's in the creature entry for dwarves.
