IIRC; the 13 dwarves in Tolkein's The Hobbit actually used an assortment of knives, swords, and bows.  Not a single mention of either axes or hammers

In old Germanic mythology (the source of our dwarf mythos'), dwarfs weren't users of weapons at all.

So, really, the most dwarfy weapon is sheer supernatural evil.  And being birthed from maggots.  Yep, maggots.

Hammer apparently, because dwarves use it in their justice system.

I heard that hammers are used in the justice system of the USA too.
Well they used to use guns, but you know... humane executions and what not. So now it's just needles.

The gavel is just a reasonable way to make noise over people arguing. Bells for schools, banging things on the table for courthouses.

Actually, they used a lot of weapons. In the movie at least, and I'm far too lazy to check the book.

Misc object using. Nothing more dwarfy than bashing heads with a floodgate or the enemy's torn off limb.

The weredwarf Urist McUrist has come! A bearded drunkard twisted into minute form. It is crazed for booze and socks. Its unwashed beard is tangled. It needs alcohol to get through the working day and has gone without a drink for far too long. Now you will know why you fear the mines.

Et tu, Urist

'Dwarven armies were vast and powerful, and possessed vast legions of soldiers, cavalry and siege weapons, and their soldiers were equipped with powerful weapons, armors and tools for battle. Many different weapons were utilized by their soldiers, such as swords, axes, throwing axes, throwing knives, warhammers, short-bows and crossbows. The Dwarves' armies also possessed siege weapons, such as catapults, "Demolisher" battering rams and battle wagons.'

Keep in mind, however, that Tolkien, despite the influence of his works post-LoTR, was hardly the sole authority on Dwarf culture, legend, and mythology.

Before Tolkien (who, incidentally, described the usage of the plural 'Dwarves' as an unforgivable mistake for a philologist), Dwarfs were purely supernatural in nature, and needed no weapons, as they themselves were incarnations of death, nightmares, and... wait for it... the rape of Goddesses.

The dwarf's true weapon is hir sheer dwarfiness.  All else is superfluous.

If your entire army isn't dual-wielding shields you're playing the game wrong.

Dual-wielding?

Don't you know beards are prehensile?
