(Awesome. I'll be figuring out spears, masonry, and the local languages so that I too can be part of a long tradition of lazy brokers. On that note, I feel like we should all at least be able to speak to the humans after the timeskip.)

Even if you found a suitable opening, I doubt it would prove all too satisfying. And it might leave some nasty wounds, depending on the moral high ground's geology.
Location subject to periodic change.
Baffler likes silver, walnut trees, the color green, tanzanite, and dogs for their loyalty. When possible he prefers to consume beef, iced tea, and cornbread. He absolutely detests ticks.

((I'm ready also. I'd focus on athletics related skills, swordsmanship, archery, farming/herbalism and possibly learning elvish.))
(Wouldn't you need to find an elf for that last one?)

Alright, it seems like most people are ready. I'll talk with Zanz and then we'll get to something a little more interesting.

((there might be an Elf in the town?

If not: learn human. Then: Find elf and learn elvish. As well as everything else.))

(I'll do that too. priority language to learn is Human, but also try to learn Elvish if there is an elf.)

Depends on if we encounter one of the rifts that causes a jump to a universe where that stuff is modded in.

((So I come in after the year timeskp then?))

Well apparently people want a season jump, but yes, you come in after/during the timeskip.

Alright, it seems like most people are ready. I'll talk with Zanz and then we'll get to something a little more interesting.

You forget to contact me.

Timeskip, since everything appears to be done.

Fortress Log
Writer: Zanzetkuken the Great
Subject: First Entry

No idea why this didn't come to me before.  Might have been a good way to keep track of how long we have been in this land.  Managed to get some basic understanding of the language of the native humans, some of us taking to it better than others.  Natives are getting some understanding of our language as well.  Considering the speed at which they're adapting to our language, it might be better to just keep teaching them rather than learn their language, but we'll still need theirs if out of town people come along.

All the basic workshops have been set-up in their own level, stockpiles just below them.  Was originally stuck to making 7x7 rooms, but someone stole my pick and tried to connect them all into one large space.  Thank God we managed to build up the supports in time, otherwise all the work on the previous level would have collapsed.  Everyone seems to be too used to the old way of huge stockpile rooms without supports, rather than the refined cave-ins that Toady would have put into 1.0.  Anyway, we have all the rooms set-up (2x3) right now and the cave entrance expanded into a trade depot/meeting hall.  Ran into an underground cave in the mining of the rooms.  People were flipping out, thinking we had hit the caverns.  I never encountered anything in the caverns whenever I played the game, so I wasn't concerned.  Wandered in while people talked about it and it turned out that it was a small room, roughly equal to the size of the areas we were already mining with a small passage at the back, which led to a fairly large area, roughly the size of the cave entrance.  I couldn't find any other exits in the area, so I headed back.  Had to stop them from walling me in, though.  Must not have seen me go in.  Claimed the room for myself, and 'blocked off' the back area after a door was installed to the room.  Plug's fairly thin, but I can get through it fairly easily, especially after I snuck out a few mechanisms to make it into a door that was meshed in appearance to the wall.

Plants are growing fairly decently.  Speaking of which, I might want to check on the-...

Commotion is coming from the meeting hall.  Wonder what it is this time...

Zanzetkuken stood up from the desk he carved from the rock in his room, and walked over to the door.  When he opened it a slight bit, a mug filled with beer hit the door frame in such a way that it flew through onto him.  After a few seconds, he closed the door, muttering to himself, "Nope."

((Sorry. It's been a rather busy time at uni lately. Midterms are next week. As for that one person who wanted out, we might want to hold a funeral if they still want out. Who was it again?

Also, did we skip to Summer or Autumn? If Autumn, some of our building progress might make more sense, and we'd have the first caravan in the near future.))

Cish was impressed. In the first month of visiting these strangers, he'd begun to think they had no idea what they were doing, despite being people who had apparently come a long way and settled in that cave. But, and not just because of the help of some of his fellow villagers, they had turned it into quite the little hideout rather quickly. They'd dug out several cellars, put together some workshops from both local materials and tools traded from the village, and from what he'd heard, they'd carved bedrooms out of solid rock in the back of the cave. Now they were building a log structure (which he had helped provide timber for) to join with the front of the cave, for some kind of trading post. Their work really was uncannily fast, though he guessed they might have some kind of special Dwarvish training, as they seemed to imply when he spoke with them. He had asked why they had not simply built a wooden house for themselves, and took so much work to carve from stone inside the mound instead, but from what he could gather, they feared coming under siege.

He stopped outside the entrance, for inside he could hear carousing and celebration. "Ay!" he called inside, "I haf brought more logs!" He had picked up more of their strange tongue than anyone else in his village, though he spoke it with a thick accent.

Kari exit the cave, and warmly greets Cish.

"Oh, hi Cish! What was that you said? All i caught was 'logs'"

She looks and sees the cart full of lumber. "Oh."

"Wait here, and I'll go get Zan. He'll know what to do with this. Come in and have a drink if you want. Not sure what we are celebrating, but we have alcohol and that is always fun"

Kari turns, motioning for Cish to follow her, whilst leaving the cart full of lumber near the entrance of the cave. She leaves Cish in the party, and walks quickly to were Zan claimed his little hole in the ground recently. She knocks on the door.

"Hey, Zan, Cish is here with lumber. What should i tell him to do with it? Just drop it at the carpenters workshop or the stockpile?"

Zanzetkuken proceeded to open the door upon determining that the voice he was hearing was sober.
"Have it put with the construction outside unless the stockpile has less than 10 'units' inside it."  After a moment of thought, he continued, "Hey, could you get me some mechanisms from the mechanic's?  I'm thinking about trying to make a bow triggered by a pressure plate."
"Worrying about the tunnel?"
Zanzetkuken saw another mug heading his direction, which he managed to catch, afterwards replying, "Maybe."  After examining the liquid inside, he handed it over to the elf.  "Why does this happen everytime any form of alcohol is gotten a hold of by the fort?"

(The logs are entire trunk-sized, dragged by horse. They make more sense as a building material than firewood-sized chunks. They would still be easily stacked in a pile, though)

(Here's a thread for someone to grab hold of, if they so choose:)

At that moment, one of the revelers thought they heard a voice coming from the back of the cave and, curious, went to investigate, unnoticed by the others.

(1 gold coin, before the timeskip. It's a lot more money than in your standard RPG, according to the raws. Easily enough for some decent tools for workshops and a bit of timber, though Cish probably owed you for saving his life, so he brought you more than that.)

Necrisha had been stumbling through the forest for many hours at this point. Her socks had long since been removed as she ended up -- somewhere without her shoes- And surprisingly she hadn't had her feet chewed up by gravel or pine needles, and a sea-foam green yarn crocheted blanket was haphazardly draped over her shoulders. Her low-end of average height was masked down to small with how withdrawn slumped over her gait was. A pair of clear glass spectacles squished up against a slightly crooked nose. Under the green blanket you could catch glimpses of a black hooded sweater and her plain blue jeans were dragging on the ground too long for her shorter legs. her mousy brown hair was shoulder length with no curl to it at all.

This is useless, you're only going to get yourself lost and exhausted. Probably die faster. But how the hell did I end up here? Last thing I know I was back from visiting relatives, late to download and try out the new version of DF. I'd just gotten the first world generated, but I could barely keep my eyes open. I had only closed them for a second I thought. Where am I!

As she comes to the clearing she hesitates, unsure of what to expect from the somewhat primitive sign of establishment. Steeling her frazzled nerves, she calls out.

"Um, hello?"
