"Huh.  Pretty impressive feat.  Maybe you're the fish whisperer.  I assume you did that while I was still asleep?  What's up with the whole sleeping thing, anyway?  I mean, why are we waking up at such strange intervals?  This guy *nudges sleeper with foot* still hasn't woken up..."

Wiping the sweat off of my face, I look over at the bear carcasses.

"We'd better get them prepared soon, then.  Any ideas on how to preserve meat?  What do you normally do in DF, just... put it in a barrel?  Do we need to dry it?  Salt it?

...I could do with some salt..."

"We would need salt to preserve, but we still need to cook it in a hot fire to prevent becoming ill.  I could build one."

"Salting and smoking were historically used. DF...varies. Let's just try to eat the bear meat as fast as we can. And cook it, thoroughly."

"That'll come in handy, eventually.  Let's get these bears processed, first though- oh, frigg, a few hours in this hellhole and I'm already talking about processing bears.  I guess that's what getting a bunch of Bay12 forumites together in one life-endangering location will do.  Oh, well.  Let's try not to starve as we gradually lose our humanity."

"Hey, humans were butchering bears for more of history than they weren't. Assuming we ignore the millions of years they were stuck in bearless Africa."

"Huh.  Fair enough.  Actually, speaking about cooking bears has made me feel a bit hungry..."

((When do we need to eat?  Do we have designated meal times for your ease?  How much do we need to eat per day?
3 meals a day with 11 people, 33 meals a day...  That food won't last long.  1 meal a day, DF style?  We have maybe 6-7 day's worth of food, max.))
((Sorry for spamming everything.  I just like this thread.))

"So, food's a pretty big problem, guys.  Let's be honest with ourselves...  We don't have that much.  I'm not a hunter myself, but until we get some farms up and running,  hunting and gathering are going to be our only methods of getting food...  Does anyone know how to hunt, or set traps, or gather food?"

In the meantime, I'll help the next person who wants to make a workshop or building construct it.  I have no skills, but I assume that will teach me something and make me a tiny bit more useful.  Anyway, as said, if anyone wants to construct something, I'll help out.  For teh expz.

(You're not spamming, OOC talk about what could be done was a feature of the old threads, so that things are planned out properly, and to spread interesting information that could be used to come up with ideas for collaboration between various people for advancement (and sometimes development) of subplotlines.  Honestly, each 'meal' unit represents about 1 week of food for 2 meals a day.  We're probably going to get ~30 useful unit off of the bears unless we can salt or smoke the meat.)

"As I said, I can fish and farm, as well as set up the fires.  We'll probably want to limit ourselves to two meals a day to preserve it, possibly slowly lowering til we are on more stable grounding so we can stretch it out."

((Then this counts for tomorrow.

On meals- wait, so 1 food unit will feed 1 person for a week?  I don't quite understand.))

(1 unit = the total amount of food that is eaten by an average person in 1 week at 2 meals a day)

((Right.  So when you said 'meals' in the supply spoiler, did you mean food units or meals?  In other words, if we have 30 'meals' of salted beef, is that enough for 30 weeks of survival, or 15 days?  (at 2 meals a day)))

"Cloaks, yes. Arrows for training, yes. Swords, terrible. Bone is not the best blade for fighting. As tools such as carving knives and such, that will work out to our advantage in the long run.."

"Oh. A fencing sword would work great actually. Thought you meant a broadsword or something similar."
