Clonk Rage
Go for clonk endevor actually, it's 100% free, lower requierments, and almsot the same game. rage is great, but some things are locked unless you have a key, like wild west I think. Mods are great for both, if you're willing to trawl through german to fine most.
Clonk Rage was actually recently made completely free, although Endeavor might be better in terms of mods.
Wait, seriously? Cool. I've toted my key with every copy i have of the game just in case, glad to know I don't have to be so anal about it now. Oh, and one thing to mention, I've managed to run mods for VERY old clonk version on rage, so if it's free, and you don't mind the confusing at first developer mode, it's great.

Starwhal: Just The Tip. It's a pretty simple game but very fun. It's not a very long game but it's still good.

Almost every worms game.

This. Our gang usually defaulted to Armageddon, but any of the 2D titles work just fine. Also had a lot of fun with Heroes of Might & Magic 3.

Worms Armageddon is the best :)

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Can't believe I forgot about worms armageddon. I'll see what I can manage.

Also my laptop isn't /that/ bad. but just not overly beefy either.

Dogfight.
http://dogfight.kuto.de/index.html

It's in german but the game itself has an english mode somewhere.
Basically 2 fighters duke it out.
Note however that there are 6 eras starting at WW1 and ending on star wars.

Jamestown isn't free, but it's fun and bullet hell and pretty.

Toribash

But seriously. Toribash is great fun, along with Sumotori.

Awesomenauts supports local split-screen (and you can even take a local party into online matchmaking!). It's not free, but it's only $5 right now (and might be $2.50 at some point during the sale).
