Backing up saves {solved}
« on: November 27, 2013, 07:26:35 am »

I've had some trouble making save backups in the past.

Will copying the data/save folder to somewhere outside the main directory preserve the savegame? All I have to do to restore to a "saved" save is delete the region folder that's being played and drag back in the "saved" folder?

ie
navigate to /data/save>COPY region folder>navigate to folder>dfsavescum>paste region folder

to restore

delete /data/save/region paste the save scum back into the data/save?

For some reason I had issues with this the last few times I played (6 months or so ago)

Actually, you don't even need to delete the old version.  Simply copy the region folder (first world is called "region1") and the default name will just append "copy" to it, such as "region1 - copy".  When you start up again, you should see your available worlds as "region1" and "region1 - copy".

For more information, the wiki has a page for importing and exporting worlds:
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Importing_and_exporting_worlds

Just act as if you're exporting to yourself :P

You can copy and rename savegames folders all you want. I have a backup folder where I move a copy of the savegame before I start a game.
