Evolution based games
« on: November 25, 2013, 11:53:13 pm »

I've been going through a bit of a phase of wanting to play some Evolution based games/ simulators/ sandboxes. Its quite a niche that hasn't been really that filled which sucks because they are great fun to play.

Anyone know some of them? Currently I'm looking at Species (http://www.speciesgame.com/) And was playing a little bit of http://anvoz.github.io/world-js/ which isn't necessarily evolution but it has its roots in it.

This "World Simulation" is kinda neat.

Indeed, I can't wait to see what they are going to update it with.

One of the prime examples of one of the weird off shoots the species evolved into.  ???

Pokemon  ;)

I can't for the life of my remember the name, but there was a really simple simulation that had these things with legs and there was food on the map. They would go around and get food and multiply. The ones that reproduced the most got their traits handed down while the ones that couldn't would leave the gene pool. I am sure someone on here will remember it.

Edit: Found it: http://www.ventrella.com/darwin/darwin.html
Got me a few hours of entertainment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution:_The_Game_of_Intelligent_Life

Its really old; almost impossible to get running on a modern system and basically requires you to follow mostly the same evolutionary lines that historically happened on Earth.  Still a great game I had a ton of fun with back in the day.  You could even play it with other people.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimEarth

Sim Earth was also good; again super dated by today.

There is also Spore, but its not realllly what anyone wanted.

It is sadly a genre that doesn't get touched often.

Ah, yeah I remember that game! I was trying to remember the name of it! Gonna have to delve into that as well; the good thing about these games is that you can just leave them running and come back and see what happened while you were gone and what new species evolved.

That sounds pretty interesting, I'm definitely looking into it.

Ah... Sim Earth, another game that I need to begin playing. I don't mind dated games at all, some of the older games are my favorites.

There is also Spore, but its not realllly what anyone wanted.

Believe it or not, I pre-ordered spore; and I don't regret it. Seriously, It was a fun game, not what I was expecting, but a fun game nonetheless and I sure got my moneys worth playing that game.

How... What? HOW DID THIS THING SURVIVE!?  :o

Spore should've taught you that things with no right to survive are capable of surviving. :P

i remember something similar from ages ago (1996?... around the "shareware" generation), it was a screensaver with colored line plant thingys (i.e. red line = weapon, green line = photosynthesis or so).

a quick google threw out this link to it: http://www.ultimatesavers.com/index.asp?ID=1381
still seems to work... but has the same problem as some dos games where they run way too fast, because of higher processor powers etc.

Not entirely, I almost got sapient Elephants on one game.
Almost.. Then they went extinct.. Stupid ever-changing landscapes & climates..

But yes, it's the best Evolution based game out there, in my opinion..
Then there's spore.. and as someone else said.. not really what we wanted.. True it's a shiny rock.. pretty and all, but we were promised gold! GOLD!

Yeah, they can evolve into some pretty crazy, yet awesome creatures. In the same world as them, one of them grew sort of spider like appendages, only two of them; after twenty or so generations though they began atrophying and the whole species basically had what looked like vestigial limbs and went back into being slugs.

SimEarth was more of a world-building game with some simplistic evolution involved.

SimLife was Maxis's evolution game
