"I have a question, how efficient are our sky ranger squadron size? If we could make that more efficient we could send in larger squads peer vehicle."

"Maybe we should try some kind of sky survey - optical, radar, microwave, the works. Both in orbit and deeper solar system, though that would be like looking for a needle in an infinite sized haystack made of needles. We dont een know if they are in the solar system, on some base on a planet or rock somewhere or dropping in from some kind of FTL..."

"The reason why I asked is because if they are in LEO then why dont they just bombard anything we do?"

"One can only assume they are too interested - maybe wanting some of us alive. Or, more unlikely, despite being cabable of at minimum interstellar travel, they have no real understanding of warfare, or at least how we have come to engage in it."

"If we eventually get the technology and the funds, I think we could get some sort of kinetic bombardment weapon to use on any alien bases we find."

DR. Melk Samson reporting!

Dr. Samson requests a couple prototypes be constructed to test the differences between coilguns and railguns(they do have slightly different mechanics and power requirements IIRC)

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

At the moment, both sorts of weapons seem to have massive overpenetration on fleshy targets. Although nothing short of several meters of steel plate can stop even a ball bearing fired at such high velocities. The former seems to have lower maintenance requirements, just from testing.

The Power Supply required for such weapons is, however, quite high. Even with salvaged energy storage technology, a 10kg backpack would be neccesary to fuel the weapon. Possible combination with prosthetics technology appears quite promising, even though said technology is also in it's infancy.

Dr. Samson got an idea from his weapons testing on how to make a somewhat practical railgun weapon that's semi man-portable. A 1.5m/57mm diameter barrel is mated to an integrated receiver/power supply with a 4-point swivel mounting(the barrel unscrews for easier transport). A soilder carries the reciever/mounting on his back(with the barrel in an attached slot), and when in position, screws the barrel in , turns on the power on, loads a slug, and fires. The whole thing is designed to be light enough to be fireman-carried for fast relocation if necessary(as light as something requiring a 10 kg power supply can be, anyways). Call it the 57mm AT railcannon
