I think I'll need to see a reference for that. Especially since you're spelling "laser" with a "z".

And the spelling affects it how? That's like saying winning tic tac toe makes you sane.

It doesn't--it merely makes me doubt your scientific background on the subject more.

Nothing personal.

I even have a link... Plus I'm fairly certain lazer is the correct spelling of the pew pew things.

I even have a link...
...So you do. For future reference, it's easier to note when you post it in a separate post, especially when your original post is at the bottom of a page.
Huh. I had no idea that could work. Not sure if it could make any real impact on the speed of a bullet. That example had an acceleration of, what, 10-15 m/s2 or so, eyeballing it? Bullets travel for a fraction of a second at close to 900 m/s. That amount of acceleration would mostly move the speed to the other side of 900 m/s half a mile away.

Not typically, no.

Would heat the bullet a lot making a fairly incendiary/armor melting bullet, also it said a fairly large object could achieve a orbital velocity with this method, though it would require quite a bit of work... inter continent artillery anyone?

To the first: Incendiary, maybe, but it also has a risk of melting the bullet.

To the second: The issue isn't the amount of acceleration, it's the amount of time. Your device would have maybe a tenth of a second to make an impact, if you were shooting at someone at the other end of a football field. That's just not enough time for much acceleration.

Well since it makes ionized explosions under the craft, perhaps we could have the explosions in the gun to make it fire the bullet out with that?

I'm not sure that would be better than gunpowder, and suspect it might be worse. And it would certainly be more expensive.

Well its good science just to see if it opens up any new possibilities of laser/ballistic hybrids.

Problem is, weapons-grade lasers destroy the ballistic component.

Perhaps a grenade launcher that shoots a projectile that makes a disco show of deadly lasers?

That could work. The question is, of course, if it's worth the cost and collateral damage. As in, equal chance of murderizing the team as the enemy.

Shoot it in a small UFO with no humans in it and you've got a free UFO, provided the grenade doesn't do too much damage to the UFO itself.

Honestly, my opinion is that we should just work on getting man-portable railguns. >_>
