It begins.

A long time ago, it started to begin. That was billions of years ago. Between now and then, many things happened. A cloud of interstellar dust was formed from the death of a star. It clumped together until it formed millions of rocks and gassy spheres, and the newborn stellar body ignited under its own weight. Planets smashed into each other, until it became a set of 9. That set became 8 in the final planetary collision, creating a moon. The surface cooled, and oceans were formed. The first life arose in a shallow lagoon filled with chemicals and compounds. The oceans were flooded with oxygen when photosynthesis arose, causing the first mass extinction and making the sea turn red with rust. The warmth was sucked from the planet, and it was plunged into a cryogenian period, a worldwide glacial age. And the ice age ended, flooding the seas with minerals and nutrients. Eventually, complex multicellular life was ready to appear.

That was the point at which it was ready.

Now it begins.

The Mantle Expansion

The second Chron* saw little in the way of diversification of the Mantle species, which like most animals of the time were exclusively filter feeders.  Favourable currents instead spread the simple swimmers and mantlepuffs further along the seas.  The green swimmers were able to establish footholds throughout the green algae-strewn west equatorial coast but were easily out-competed by the blue swimmers of the northern beaches, better adapted to the colder temperatures.  Instead the second Chron saw swimmers spread throughout the north equatorial ocean, feeding on the plentiful but thinly spread microscopic life upon the waves.

The mantlepuffs, meanwhile, took advantage of the ecological niches created by the red swimmers and migrated north to their beaches.  Without directly competing with the blue radial colonies produced favourable conditions for preying upon the plankton species they ignored.  Equally, the green swimmer colonies on the western equatorial beaches permitted the expansion of mantlepuffs to fill the niche.
