I occasionally try to play but usually run into some issue that pisses me off and I end up ragequitting for ages.(Usually bullshit migrant related stuff, NO I'M NOT READY FOR YOU FUCKFACE MIGRANTS GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM MY FORT, etc etc)

Honestly whenever I get the "DF urge" I just end up playing Gnomoria these days, a bit easier to jump into for me.

Jeez, it's been about a year since I've played it. I find that I play it really intensely for a short time every year or so. Right now I'm just waiting for the next update, then I'll probably get back into it for some time.

It's always been in a cycle for me, i play it for a few months, take a break for another few months, play it again for another few months etc...
Currently i'm on the "play it" part , and thanks to dwarf therapist ,dfhack+several interesting plugins , it's better than ever on my reclaimed underground fort.
I even played recently a bunch of adventure mode characters, something i never really do for long though, due to the horrible performance in towns (while i never have any performance issue in fortress mode).

Eagerly waiting for the next version to be released, sometime in the incoming decade hopefully

I tried to play DF, but in my first game my laptop almost shit itself. I can play Paradox games, currently doing EVE, which is slightly laggy, and LOL and shit, but DF is apparently too much.

Thanks for "completing the circle" as it were.  In an admittedly content-light thread, yours is the most pointless.

I suffered the same fate as many others, once I got good enough at the game to make a large fortress, my computer couldn't handle running the game, and a "small fort" style game didn't interest me.  I played for a bit more when the release with adventure mode dropped, but then put it aside "until the next release", since then I've been busy whenever a release dropped, and it was all too easy to put off playing again "until the next release" again.  Got pulled back into the forums [del]shilling[/del] doing support for DDA, and that got me reading the forums again, though I don't have much time to post now.

DF is extremely awesome, but I never really did get far... I'm way too meticulous about how I do everything, and I'd scrap the fort if things went lopsided. With that said, I played quite a bit of DF but not really to any depth lol. Then I just found myself reading the stories and keeping up on updates, and eventually found this part of the board and noticed it's a good place to hear about indie/obscure games.

DF Is something I'm planning to tackle when all of the conditions are right. (that comet coming by is one of them)

To be fair, some people actively carry a chip on their shoulder here about not playing DF. Mostly because they're sick of DF memes and automatically being identified as a DF groupie simply for being here.

I can't help but be slightly amused by the vehemence some people declare, on the DF boards, that haven't played DF and never will though.

For a game enthusiast board people sure do take things quite seriously, on both ends of the spectrum. It's always amusing to see sparks fly for no apparent reason. Jerk on, I say.

On topic: I started frequenting this board because of all the amazing indie games people were posting about. I'd have never even known about a lot of my current favorites if not for Other Games. Cheers.

I don't understand. Someone was legitimately interested in whether or not the community in Other Games tended to play DF much or not. This thread is also a place to consider what else the forum is good for. It's not circlejerking unless you make it so.

Closer to topic:
The main point of DF is the world creation, and that's my favorite part. To me, fortress and adventure mode are different ways to interact with the world and find out about it and leave a mark on it; but they get pretty tedious, so I only play every few months.

I haven't had the kind of spare time to play Fort mode for a looooong time, and I've had all the fun that I can with the current version of Adventure mode.

If the prospect of playing Dwarf Fortress interests you but seems too daunting/annoying, due to the learning curve, I highly recommend giving Gnomoria a try. Out of all of the "DF-likes" I consider Gnomoria to be the most charming and entertaining. It's very playable in its current state. It's also extremely simple to learn. As someone posted somewhere, it's like DF for when you want to turn your brain off and relax.

Thanks! I'd seen that on Steam, and thought, "ooh, graphical DF", but wasn't sure how daunting it would be. I'll have to give it a try sometime!

In my opinion, you really should word that question better.  'Am I the only one around here who has never played Dwarf Fortress?'
