Last time i played it was in 2010 or something, the stacked bugs and micro made me get bored.

Every few months I'll revisit it, and tend to stop playing again when things degenerate into building phallic monuments or making dumb minimods. DF gets a lot of hype for its difficulty, complexity, freedom, and silliness, but at the end of the day it is still a great game that's fun to play. The biggest problem for many in learning it is going through an initial period of no-lifing it until you understand everything, but after that it's possible to just revisit casually and play a few forts.

DF tends to make my current laptop overheat and grind it to a quick FPS death. I'll play again when I get monies for a PC.

If the prospect of playing Dwarf Fortress interests you but seems too daunting/annoying, due to the learning curve, I highly recommend giving Gnomoria a try. Out of all of the "DF-likes" I consider Gnomoria to be the most charming and entertaining. It's very playable in its current state. It's also extremely simple to learn. As someone posted somewhere, it's like DF for when you want to turn your brain off and relax.

I haven't played in a year or two, even then I wasn't playing much. I've probably spent more time modding the game than playing it, though I gave that up when everything I made became obsolete in one of the bigger updates. I keep thinking I'll give it another go one of these days, but honestly the thought of relearning everything is a bit daunting. I don't have the inexhaustible amount of free time I had when I first started playing.

I havent played since 2008. I did one mega-project and that was pretty intense. I think I got what I needed from it back then and from here out I dont think trudging through the poor UI is worth it for me anymore.

Granted, the poor UI is part of the charm I guess; folks take pride in being bad ass enough to manage it. But yeah, way too tedious to enjoy once you learn all the ins and outs of the game, the desire to overcome it fades.

I also dont care for adventure mode, so most of the current development means little to me. On top of that, the level of detail is a neat idea but IMHO does not improve actual gameplay. I value and honor Tarns desire to move in this direction, but it's not something I care for and in the end, just makes the game less enjoyable for most people. Blasphemy I know but thats how I feel.

I hang out here because the folks who tend to enjoy it also tend to enjoy the same games I do. It's a more hardcore/intellectual set of gamers (for the most part). Added, it's usually a pretty civil place to be. I check the Other Games section all day most every day for exciting new games to try for the last 5 years now. CRAZY!

Yeah, I got a bit out of it once the 3d was implemented, and then again once the military got the big overhaul and the interface for military stuff is a bit too annoying/micro. Likewise when you get 30 new immigrants and have to figure out what you want to do with all of them

I think that's the primary reason why people plop them into magma.

To answer the question: I've played it off and on every 12-18 months.  So... technically, I play it.

In my opinion, you really should word that question better.  'Am I the only one around here who has never played Dwarf Fortress?'

Yeah... I kick DF back up a couple times a year, more or less like clockwork, but usually not much more than that. Last go was during the summer, iirc. Play fairly intensely for a week or two, get distracted by other games/responsibilities for a few months, repeat. DF's in my overall gaming cycle, basically. One of relatively few that actually comes up pretty consistently.
