...This is an arena game.
So? I don't tend to make my games incredibly fast-paced. I really don't kill people off unless they rolled really badly, or were pretty badly injured in the first place.

Hm. Well, I feel the need for penalties in some way, to discourage resets, like you guys mentioned. Maybe it'd be better as 5 and 10. Or maybe even 10 and 20. However, since I don't expect people to die TOO often, I think it'd be better fit as a lower number, seeing as the poll is also saying that boss fights will be either 5 or 10 turns after the start of a round/this round. And after a boss fight, everyone gets a little bonus thingy/full heal, as long as they didn't just hide.

...Couldn't you just only penalize people for suicides and incredibly stupid deaths?

This sounds like a good idea. If someone shoots you with a rocket launcher or uses power word kill, no problem. If you shoot a rocket launcher at the invulnerable golem right next to you or jump of a cliff, you get a Darwin Point. Three DP and you lose a stat point, ten and you lose a skill. You can only be made weaker by your own actions.

This sounds like a good idea. If someone shoots you with a rocket launcher or uses power word kill, no problem. You can only be made weaker by your own actions.
Darwin Points should probably be cleared periodically, though. Maybe a suicide could cause a severe penalty on your next life, but afterwards not do anything.

I dunno. I mean, first off, you can pretty easily avoid most--if not all--Darwin Points with a little forethought. In addition, just one DP isn't much.

Maybe somewhere in between? Moderate immediate penalty (must hop everywhere, loses signature weapon, something like that), plus the small-but-growing penalty for continuing stupidity?

So basically if you die a dishonorable death, you are penalized for it.

However, if you die in a fair match against someone else, or a boss, or something like that, you are not penalized, but then again, your opponent may be getting stronger.

Also, how about a wait time after dying? Like 1 or 2 turns before respawn.

After a darwin point is collected, a moderate temporary penalty is accrued for the next life, and over time, if you fuck up more, then you lost shit.

At this point, I might as well bring up that for point rewards, it's the opposite. For every 5, you get a new stat point. Every 15, you get an extra skill.

As long as Death Points apply effects more slowly than Kill Points, it's all good.

The currently-suggested "death points" have a notable effect instantly; however, I think it only lasts the one life, and it's only for times that you die stupidly.

Just to clarify once again, the main reason I was going to make it around 3/10 and for every death, is that I can guarantee that you guys will be getting Kill Points often. Notice how With a single kill, Elephant made 5, as killing a PC gives you 2 points, and achievements generally give you 3 points, or something else special.

So I was thinking that even if you did die, it would be counterbalanced by the rather easy-to-get KP. But whatever. We'll probably stick to Darwin Points instead of Death Points.

Considering that, between the high lethality level of the PCs and the swift gain in power of the killers, making them weaker whenever their dice turn up unfavorably--making such events likelier--is not exactly fair. Or, once we get some players strong enough to kill most other players and some too weak to be effective, not remotely fun for anyone except the squabbling gods.
